Why a netbook though? You can get a regular laptop for $600-700 and it will be more than sufficient if you're just using it for school and internet browsing.
I have a Sony VAIO that I paid about $700 for, tax free on base. Has a big screen, good battery life, easy to type on, etc. I don't play games or anything on it so you don't need a huge RAM or video card and so on so it saves on cost.
You mentioned that your current laptop is big and bulky, that's really how they all were a few years ago. Now even the crappier ones are fairly slim so that shouldn't be a problem.
