Are you referring to CLEP Analyzing and Interpreting Literature? I do not recall an essay portion of this test....

Quote:Because writing about literary texts is central to the study of literature, some colleges may require candidates to take an optional essay section in addition to the multiple-choice section. Source: CLEP: Analyzing and Interpreting Literature :ack: :ack: :ack: :ack:

I didn't know A & I Lit had an essay portion either. I don't know of anyone who has had to take it. Are you a paying member of Instantcert? The specific exam thread may have some info.

A & I Literature does not have an essay.
I think you're thinking about CLEP English Composition w/ Essay?

A&I Literature, English Literature and American Literature all have optional essay components. We don't discuss them often here as the most prevalent schools do not require the essay components to be completed. If you read the link that wurst provided, it describes that the essay component is only available now with the pen and paper version of the A&I Literature CLEP. Wurst: It's not something we come across very often here. However, if you follow the basic five paragraph essay format structured around a thesis statement you should be fine. The essay itself is scored by whichever college requests it and not the collegeboard itself. So, when entering an institution code at the time of taking the test, be sure and include the college which requests the essay component so that the collegeboard sends it on to them. edit: There's a link to the 'five paragraph' structure that most English Composition courses teach here. You can google 'five paragraph' structure for other perspectives to find whatever works best for your understanding.

REA has sample essays. I have this book. The practice tests are utter crap and are absolutely nothing like the test, but the study guide is helpful and the essays may help you.
