AAS options post-Pierpont
#31
(02-21-2025, 06:36 AM)Ares Wrote: Pierpont is still reading the WVCTCS BOG Handbook (Page 3) wrong.

The BOG Residency Requirement is very clear:

Quote:Residency Requirement:

12 credit hours from a regionally accredited higher education institution. A minimum of 3 credits may be required at the host institution.

It only says that they MAY require 3 credits be completed at the host institution.

Someone should probably inform them.

The only problem is if they enforce that 3 credits be taken at Pierpont for non-residents that is $1,707 in addition to the $350.

Someone forward thinking at Pierpont would bundle a special online class with this degree for a lower cost.

It's up to the school's discretion what they wish to do with the program. They may be seeking revenue to support the campus, in-person students, and to pay professors a fair wage

Right but they are falsely stating what is clearly written in the WVCTCS BOG Handbook.

BTW there is no such thing as a "fair wage", there is simply a market based wage where schools will pay the least amount possible where they can still get someone to accept the job. That is how all wages work.

Sadly it looks like, IMHO, the current Governorship wants to DRIVE AWAY, non-residency BOG students ... I assume it was hurting their reputation?

They have screwed us all ....

If it was a funds issue.... again IMHO, most BOG degree seekers do so because other options are "out of range" of their means (This is my case), leaving this is a "this one, or none" option ... so:
  • Isn't "some" money for a non-resident BOG student better than "NO" money from a student that doesn't attend due to the "ballooned issues" the residency requirement introduces?
Its a huge cost increase, plus a lot wasted time (as I have well over 100 credits already... why do I want any "extra" from them, for nothing I need?)

The FACT they are being dishonest, should be reportable/punishable to an accrediting body, shouldn't it be? (squeaky wheels bug ppl)

saying "we dont want too" is one thing... but to LIE?

I agree, let's report WV. How dare they be the only state to have offered such an accessible program for adults all over the world who have deferred or interrupted their educational plans. How dare they also be one of the poorest states. WV should be ashamed.
-49 states that don't offer anything comparable.

Although I may have been abit harsh ... my issue is not with WV (I'm Canadian, lets not compare poor and busted) ... (PS: I love America, as the greatest nation on Earth)

Its with the Institution in question, Pierpont, LYING ... I could live with "No, we have decided not to offer this". But to be fully dishonest, saying they can not due so, due to policy/rules, in the WVCTCS BOG Handbook.

It is disturbing when accredited institutions lie to the public.... to me at least

PS: So I say, Canada ALSO lacks such options for degrees (& I'd rather an American Degree, honestly)

I don't think they were lying. I think the handbook is poorly written.

From Figure 1 (page 2)
Combined Maximum Credits (48 hours): Standardized Exams ,Challenge Exams, National Guidelines, Special Assessment, Portfolio, Traditional Transfer Credit (non-WV system), Traditional Classes + 12 Credits (Regionally Accredited Institution Required) =60 Credits Governors A.A.S.
Does this mean you need 12 RA courses from within the WV system?

"12 credit hours from a regionally accredited higher education institution. A minimum of 3 credits may be required at the host institution. Petition for exception to the residency requirement may be made to the Chief Academic Officer of the host institution." (Page 3)
Ok, so 12 RA credits with a minimum 3 residency credits at host CC.

"Credit awarded through extra-institutional credit will not count toward 12 credit hour residency requirements" (Page 5)
...So 12 credit hour residency minimum?

"Twelve credits completed at regionally accredited institutions. At least 3 of the 12 credits hours must be completed at the institution awarding the degree, if required by the home institution." (Page 10)
...So back to 12 RA credits with a minimum 3 residency credits at host CC

If that is the case, I lack the policy decrypting ability to follow it, sadly. (I am ok at tests, but I am NOT an academic)

still seeking alternatives, but I think the well is dry

I am sorry but you are from Canada why are you fighting to get an American college to change their degree requirements because you missed the deadline? Give it up already.
