Hi all
Can someone tell me what the requirements are to beable to enroll for the above degree at EC. I was told by others that I have to be a LPN first, is this true?
I'm very concerned because I had already signed up to take A&P and Microbiology at EC.
Please, I would appreciate your input in this situation. I've always wanted to do Nursing, but it will be very hard for me to attend classes on a regular basis, due to work and taking care of two children.
Help.

I'm not in Excelsior's Nursing program although I am an LPN as of this moment, but I am sure one has to at least already be an LPN, Paramedic, military medic (I think),respiratory therapist, Physician Assistant(not medical assistant). Also I think one can enter if one has already completed the first year or two of an RN program. I could be wrong. It's been a while since I've checked.
If you are thinking of nursing, you will eventually have to do those clinicals. Even as an Lpn. There is no testing out of LPN clinicals. Even for those with prior medical training. In my own Lpn class, I was in class with former Emt's, medical assistants, cna's, xray techs and people with zero medical skills. We all had to do the same clinicals.
You can always do the Excelsior program after that and test out to get your RN ,but you do have to have those clinicals behind you first.
Be aware too that the Excelsior Nursing degree isn't accepted in all states. My state unfortunately doesn't recognize Excelsior Nursing degrees. It's important to research that angle as well.

School of Nursing Admission Policy
Excelsior College nursing degree programs have been specifically designed to meet the educational needs of qualified individuals with significant background and/or experience in clinically oriented health care disciplines. All prospective nursing students must submit an application for admission to the School of Nursing.
Each program has revised admission requirements, effective September 1, 2006, as noted below:
Associate Degree Programs
Admission to our associate degree nursing programs is open to:
Licensed Practical/Vocational Nurses,
paramedics,
military service corpsmen,
individuals who hold degrees in clinically oriented health care fields in which they have had the opportunity to provide direct patient care (e.g., physicians, respiratory therapists, and physician assistants).
Also, individuals who have successfully completed at least 50 percent of the clinical nursing credit hours in an associate, baccalaureate, or RN diploma nursing program may be eligible for the program if they apply within 5 years of completing their last nursing course. The necessary documentation, such as copies of licenses, certificates, and official transcripts must be submitted with the admissions application.
The Undergraduate Application for Admission (online and PDF) identifies required supporting documentation required for admission by each category of applicant as well as additional admissions criteria.

It looks as though you won't specifically be enrolled in the nursing program, and as a mom with 4 small kids- BELIEVE me, I know it's tough. Don't give up! Your kids won't be small for ever, and your bits of free time will come back to you little by little. (even if it's at midnight!) Just keep going.
You have to be creative- think backwards. What CAN you do now??
Well, you know you will need local classes for clinical, and you can't fit that into your schedule now- so instead, take the regular education classes at EC and then when the time comes transfer INTO your local program and graduate from there (not EC). See, you can do it! You can work on these for now.
Another suggestion, plan for your bachelor degree- take the tests, take classes- do everything you can so you can transfer into your nursing program fully loaded! Then, after you get your LPN or RN, you can finish your bachelors back at EC. Just be sure to meet with an advisor at some point to be sure your transfer will be smooth.
ALL THE BEST!!
