CLEP doesn't make money on the testing fees, the testing center does.  So if they did online proctoring, it would just change who got that money (one of the proctoring companies vs. a testing center at a college).

colleges lose money when we use CLEP instead of paying tuition, and they would lose money if they didn't administer exams- they need incentive. I don't really know what the sales pitch College Board uses is, I mean it's not really a win for the college unless someone getting to use 4 CLEP exams is a reason to enroll, and it may be... but Dfrecore is right, if they pulled the little revenue from administering away from the colleges, then what? Of the ACE evaluated products, College board is heads above everyone else in terms of numbers and credit acceptance.

"Academia rarely chooses to be convenient" is it in a nutshell!

I'm not sure what the overall benefit is, though, of proctoring/testing fees.  I'm not taking a CLEP at the college I'm enrolled at anyway; it isn't local.  That's the whole point.  The current setup makes perfect sense for those going the traditional route overall, but that's decreasing as everything in life gets more digitized.  Online university is getting more and more common.

I'd be more than happy to test online through the college I'm actually attending, which would potentially provide a benefit to the school that they are not currently getting.
