Calling all ALEKS Statistics drop outs to this thread for feedback

First off I'd like to mention that I've almost given up on ALEKS: Introduction to Satistics. I've achieved 62% at the highest mark. Every assessment is 25 questions. Usually when I hit Question #18 it increases in difficulty. I've probably spent over 150 hours. Watched all of Khan Acadeny, YouTube, open courses, etc. ALEKS course structure is very different. It bothers me that when I get to a specific topic and clearly answer it incorrectly ... You get 3 to 4 similar questions that follow. However, just about to move on from Satistics and looking for feedback on other options.

1. DSST - I figure since I can't grasp really anything "Self teaching" in the Statistics area that DSST wouldn't be an option for me to pass the DSST. Need feed back on this. I'd prefer this route but videos are also killing me.

2. SL: Level of difficulty ? Proctored?

3. Sophia: I read a great review on this somewhere here. Looking for more info. Ace accredited ?

4. Saylor.org: Free course with 25 dollar proctor fee

5. TECEP: I'd love to be able to take a shot at this. Not confident.

I'm not the type of person to give up on things however I'm very frustrated with ALEKS and have worked it on and off for about 8 months on introduction to Statistics. With two little rascals age 7 and 5 running around "Self Teaching" statistics is painful.

Just looking for feedback. I know none of them are "Easy" it's just the ALEKS is killing me and I'd like to get some feedback on experience. 1. Who has been in my situation with ALEKS . 2. Who has experience with any of the alternate methods listed 3. Time it took to complete the alternate option

I know we have a million posts on this. Primarily looking for feedback from ALEKS dropouts of Introduction to Statistics and what alternate option you choose.

I have the areas I'm week on in ALEKS. They are just very difficult to Self Teach.

Maybe get some in person tutoring? Sometimes there's no substitute for having someone sit down, look at your mistakes and explain what you're doing wrong.

OP, it might help if you can provide some details about where you're stuck on the "pie." We might be able to point to specific learning tools/strategies you can use to focus on to overcome the obstacle you're currently facing. If you're at 62% already, it seems a waste to start over from scratch. May I ask where you started from (ie your initial assessment score)? And, what your other math background is?

I found the ALEKS format somewhat frustrating as well. However, I rather liked that an incorrect answer prompted subsequent similar questions as I almost always get incorrect answers from simple arithmetic errors rather than misunderstood concepts.

If it's of any help motivation-wise: I took a traditional B&M full-term stats course before I did ALEKS stats. I only took the ALEKS course to see what it was like (I hope to get into math education). After getting an A in a traditional full term stats course, I still didn't pass ALEKS stats on the first pass. It took me a couple of days over the course of two weeks to pass.

I took a few of the Stats courses offered by Aleks. I will say they were challenging. The ONLY way I was able to learn and pass was by printing each and every explanation for each and every practice problem I completed. I have a very large binder of those problems somewhere in the house. Lol.

It is time consuming and challenging but I managed to complete Intro to Stats in about 3 weeks. However, I spent every evening and weekend for 3 weeks working on the material. Once you feel comfortable with Intro to Stats, the other Stats courses will be a breeze because the content is similar.

Sidenote- Lucky for me, Kaplan accepted all 3 stats courses (2 upper level based on ACE recommendations) so my hard work wasn't in vain. Most schools consider them duplicates.

If i remember correctly ryoder printed out every conceivable ALEKS problem and kept them in a book or on a board in his study area, in this way there was reference for everything he would see and it finally got him through (might have been someone else, its been awhile).

I had trouble with ALEKS College Algebra, it was just so incredibly broad. that combined with having to know how to use the tools inherent in the system I just felt outgunned. I switched to SL and found studying more specific information in a chapter approach worked much better for me. I like the specific smaller doses and that helped get me through....kinda proud of that "B" I earned. More than anything else Math was the reason I spent 20 years earning my degree.

I started ALEKS Stats a few years ago. It just didn't work for me.

I ended up taking Stats at my local CC during something called Intersession. Intersession is a four week term that is held after the spring term and before the regular summer term. So I knocked out Stats in four weeks.

I just recently completed Aleks Business Stats. It was also tough, but I managed to get through it after about a month and a week of solid work. The hardest part was trying to remember the different equations and steps through the problems. I would be able to complete the problem fine, but would forget a small detail in the calculations, so I copied down the equations to help remember them. A lot of times they will skip the last part of the assessment because you miss one question in the middle. I was very frustrated getting through it, but I finally was able to finish it. Hope you find a good alternative if you can't get through it.

That's the way I went after I totally gave up on ALEKS ... a week later I had my 3 statistics credits
