Big +1 on the mentor making all the difference. Another tip is to check out the syllabus for the course ahead of time (TESU makes them available on the course description page). It will give you the number of assignments, grading structure, and textbooks required. That was a huge help in deciding to take courses there for me. I'm the type that doesn't flinch at 100 math problems for homework but starts sobbing at the very thought of even a short reaction paper. Knowing in advance what the assignments will be really helped inform my decisions.
ETA: Another +1 for the OL section over GS. I had a course that I signed up for as OL but needed to drop the first week. I took it again the next semester as GS and the discussion post topics from the OL section had just been added to the weekly written assignments as an additional paper. As far as I'm concerned, that just made the GS harder since the answer now needed to be of a certain length and cited/formatted as a paper rather than a quick-and-dirty discussion post.
