Point of information: at no point has a majority voted for Trump, and only in 2024 did he even win a plurality of votes cast. The Electoral College system places its thumb on the scale for candidates who appeal to those in low population states, giving them disproportionate influence on who becomes president.
Yet he still won by sheer numbers.... kinda a weird gotcha to die on. Because even without an electoral system, he would have won.. The plurality vs majority voting system is irrelevant, and not how our government is set up for presidential elections.

There's no need to be so defensive. The person I responded to believed that a majority had voted for Trump and I correctly pointed out that he didn't. That's it.

As for the relevance, there's a difference between winning a majority, especially a large one, in which case one can reasonable claim a modest mandate, and eking out a plurality, in which case one is simply the least unpopular candidate.

As a euopean it seemed like that this was the major topic for that election: America first and get those non-Americans out.

Ok, I guess there where also a few Q-Anons who wanted to save children from pizzerias - but I don't think that group was crucial.
Problem is: With that kind of politics you can't strengthen the education sector, that the US was so proud of: Free universities, elite education, an honor to be invided as a gues lecturer to iviy league schools.
All that is now gone. I'd love to do a semester in the states, but as a socialist I fear I wouldn't make it thru immigration as soon as they check my social media. I'm far from beeing a radical, but still I don't feel welcome to the US at this time.

Hard times for free, independent education. :-(

For the people that voted for him (49.8% of the 64.1% of eligible voters who turned out), that was one of the key reasons.  The thing is how those people imagined his polices would go and how they actually go are not the same thing.  Many thought that people would magically change their mind on the US being a place they wanted to live.  They did not understand how brutal this would be to people who they don't necessary think of as "bad guys", and they didn't realized just how negative of an economic impact these policies would be.  There are also those that view the cruelty as a feature not a bug, however I have to choose to believe that's not the majority of those people (its really hard to believe that some days).

The problem is really difficult and multifaceted.  As a leftist (like an actual leftist, not left for America) I would defiantly say a large part of the problem is education based, but also most (not all!) of the problems we have in America are just a different font of the same problems that every other nation has.  There are plenty of European politicians who made a career out of Anti-Immigrant, Anti-Romani, or Anit-Islamic rhetoric.  What's happening now in the US can (and has) happen in Germany, or England, or Italy or...

Shit sure dont hit having History being a hype fixation/Special interest now days...

Trump also promised they would focus on CRIMINAL illegal aliens. He said they would focus on gangbangers, drug dealers, murderers, etc. Personally, I don’t feel all that threatened by 19 year old honor students who happen to be brown. But then, I’m not a Republican.

Worth noting ICE is not targeting the gang bangers, drug dealers, murderers, etc because they are dangerous. It’s a lot easier to deport college students, cleaning ladies, roofers, and the like. They don’t tend to fight back with guns and bombs.

I get a lot of non-Americans wanting to go to school in America, who see Canada, Europe, etc as lesser options. Some of them are attempting to apply for refugee status, or permanent residency ("green card") based on having an American spouse, to come here to go to college. Many of these people are not reading the American news and are not aware of what is going on these days, so they have no idea how easily their residency status can be revoked, or that the government is looking into denaturalizing people.

Even most Americans don't know that the US government can block or revoke a visa (or a US citizen's passport) for effectively any reason it wants. They can also revoke a US citizen's citizenship. A few decades ago US citizenship was revoked for people who deserted their military post or didn't show up when drafted, and US passports were revoked for people belonging to German-American clubs, among other things.

I have even started hearing whisperings that dual citizens may be, in the next few years, forced to choose between keeping their foreign citizenship(s) and giving up their American one, because America considers it a loyalty / security issue to have a second citizenship. Of course, they might only do this to people whose second citizenship is of one of those 32+ government-designated undesirable countries....

It is a very tough time to be a foreign student right now. And in some cases schools get more funding the more foreign students they enroll, because the diversity is seen as a good thing. So if that is cancelled, tuition rates could go up too.
Finished: 2 AAs, 1 BA, 2 trade schools, 3 ENEB MAs.

Maybe he is just afraid that a 9 year old will take his job.

Minimum wage laws do a better job of protecting college students from the poors. Need to raise it higher.
