its like they make it up as they go yaknow? its super frustrating.
they as academic counselors have basically ONE job - know the transferability of credits, help with finding undergrad colleges, and help with making a degree plan.
You'd think theyd spend some time looking into the specifics and complications that barely even come up in their job.
Psh!

Ouch! I think an ACE approved course that came from an actual college like PFC should hold more water than a management class from McDonalds, for example, or even SL or ALEKS. If I'm understanding correctly, you need to just talk to somebody else--or is there nobody else to talk to?
Back in highschool I had so many problems with the way things were run that the principal knew me by name, and you know what? She took my side from time to time. She was amazing, and shortly after she won principal of the year, not just in the state, but the country. Wow.
"Former principal Dr. Jill Martin was named the 2007 MetLife/National Association of Secondary School Principals National High School Principal of the Year."

The point of that was:
Maybe there is somebody who will let you explain the situation, listen and understand, and even if they cannot do anything about it maybe they explain it to the person in charge.

Rickyjo,
You need to watch out how you talk about my favorite fast food restaurant. LOL Just kidding. Remember that McDonald's Management class often offers hands on real world experience to go with it. So you might get more out of that course than an online management course from PF, maybe except all the booksmarts and technical terms of the class.

kevinmanemane Wrote:So here's what i don't understand,
How is it possible that a regionally accreditted college like Excelsior will accept Penn Foster's Cost Accounting course as Upper Level (as long as its received from an ACE transcript) towards a bachelor's degree, but my Sacramento community college will not accept the same course even as lower level towards an meesley beginner accounting certificate?
I looked into this hardcore and according to HEA Amendment 2007 passed by Congress, any course taken at a nationally accreditted college, as long as it is ACE approved (which PFs Cost Accounting is), it should be just as eligible to transfer as any other regionally accreditted college.
I know also that it's always up to the college to accept whatever they want, but my CC specifically states that it will accept up to 15 credits for transfer. So they are capable and willing to transfer credits - thats not the issue. But their email solely stated that they would not accept the credits for transfer, even if it came on an ACE transcript, because it is from an only nationally accreditted college, which HEA Amendment 2007 specifically states community colleges CANNOT do.
I told the counselors at the CC this and they completely blew me off and just said, "we dont accept credits from national"
I said, "i understand that - did you even listen to what i just said. its a little more complicated than that."
"hmph" is what he said. So then i asked, "are you SURE you need a masters to be a counselor there, cause it seems like i know more about subjects like these than you do."
hahaha
no, i didnt say that. i WANTED to though.
Anybody know about this and thinks maybe i have a case here and if i do, do you know where i could start up a fight to perhaps win this thing?
I need Cost Accounting as my class before i get my certificate, but they almost NEVER offer the dang class, and when they do, its ALWAYS during my work hours that i simply cannot change. So i HAVE to find another means and Penn Foster looks like the best way. But theyre bein douches about it.
Hmph!
Kevin,
Maybe I missed it, but did you send in the ACE Transcript to your CC? If so when you have a situation like that just send in the transcript and don't call and tell your college where you took the ACE approved course at. Especially if it says that the ACE transcript doesn't mention where the course was taken at. That way you get the credit because they will accept ACE recommendations. Let your CC figure it out without you giving them a heads up not to accept.

No slam on McDonalds, I used to work there and have defended the program and ACE acceptance in the past when people made fun of it. That's why I included ALEKS and SL as well, to show that I'm not saying they are illegitimate (big fan of ALEKS and SL!), I'm simply suggesting that a third party evaluator may see a benefit to a college that is DETC approved if they wish to make a differentiation as opposed to disparaging it vs. programs that are otherwise not reviewed at all by anybody but ACE.
Put another way, I LOVE ACE, McDonald's management classes, ALEKS and SL; however, if I knew nothing about any of them, and was taking a cursory look at which is more likely to be equivalent to my program of study at a college, I would choose the program from another college instead of discriminating against it.
Does that make sense? I feel that I'm expressing it badly, but my primary point is I like anything ACE reviewed from anywhere, but a college is most likely equivalent to another college.
