Completely Online Independent Study Courses
#11
sanantone Wrote:I don't think American Public University offers independent study courses.
Sorry, error... was referring to their normal online courses. :p

rebel100 Wrote:For CSU-Pueblo the answer is....it depends on the course. None of the six courses I took required any form of exam, I chose them in part because of that. Other courses they offer do indeed require exams and proctors, sometimes more than once. They publish a booklet (online) that includes each course syllabus, that should tell you what you need to know...

"Courses which require proctored exams are marked in the catalog with a  (hand)symbol. Additional information is provided in the FastFacts Course Guide available on the Schedule of Courses page at

http://extendedstudies.colostate-pueblo....tFacts.pdf. "

I believe they will allow Proctor U as well, at least if you can demonstrate an inability to find a local proctor.
Thank you for the info!!

SteveFoerster Wrote:I never had to do this, so I don't know, but is it difficult to find a local proctor for those schools that require one? Does the school help you in any way?
The problem is... I'm an international student, so locating a proctor would be rather difficult, unless it is a Prometric or Pearson VUE exam, like the UExcels are. Not to mention the amount of explaining and appealing I would have to do....

I will add that my CSU-Pueblo experience was simply stellar...from the lady who answers the phone to the financial aid officer to the instructors they really have their act together. So much so that I briefly considered withdrawing from COSC and finishing my degree through the Con-Ed Department at CSU-Pueblo. I've also submitted course concepts and tried to find a way to directly associate myself with these fine educators. Just a fantastic group of people.
MBA, Western Governors University February 2014
BS Charter Oak State College November 2011
AS in EMS August 2010

I'm always happy to complete the free application waiver for those applying to WGU (I get a free gift from WGU for this).  Just PM me your first/last name and a valid email so I can complete their form.

Just to add to the list for selected instances, University of North Alabama offers upper-level Accounting courses online, in self-paced format. As far as I can tell (I have not yet enrolled, but it's on my to-do list soon), the exams are not proctored.

I don't whether this circumstance fits the proctoring issue for course credit or not, but my daughter-in-law is arranging a proctor through our local library for a CSU required Accuplacer exam. They handle everything once you identify the proctor. Here are the instructions she was given: Before Test Day:
1) Contact Elizabeth Grutt and get a CSU-Pueblo student id (PID) number.
2) Contact CSU-Pueblo Cashier’s Office and pay the $5.00 test unit fee (719-549-2131). There is a $5.00 cost per test unit, so it’ll be $5.00 for the SS test.
3) Provide me with the proctor’s full name, title, name of library, email address, and phone number. I will contact the proctor directly to get the required Proctor Security Agreement, provide him/her with the testing instructions/set up the temporary testing site.
4) Contact your proctor directly to schedule the test date.
5) Provide me with the test date information. I need this date in order to set up the proctor’s site access.

Please note that the temporary testing site can be set up once payment is received, I have the proctor’s signed document (Proctor Security Agreement) on record, and I know the test date.

College Credit Courses | Online & Distance Education, UND

some courses do not require a proctor, but there's no way of knowing until you see the syllabus
Introduction to Medical Anthropology | Online & Distance Education, UND

Q) How do I take exams? Who can serve as a proctor?
A) Exam information will be noted on the course syllabus. If proctored (monitored/supervised) exams are required to complete your course, you will need to designate an approved proctor to administer those exams at a location near you.

My experience with UND distance learning at Valley City was quite demanding. My son really had to work extra hard to earn his B in Music History. But I must say that these guys really have there act together although they are a pricey alternative unless you have no other choice for a particular course.
