a side note for your biostats degree.
Just understand that R is a free/open source stats package and good for learning statistical analysis, but very few companies use it. So while it has been picking up steam in the university research realms the last few years, most biomed companies still use SAS, SPSS, STATA and Mathematica.
Here are some links for you:
BIOSTATISTICS/STATISTICS SOFTWARE PROGRAMS - Compiled by Betty C. Jung
http://www.mcw.edu/biostatistics/Research/Software.htm
RSPH | Statistical Software Tutorials on the Web
Kind of old data but still useful
UCSF Biostatistics: Power and Sample Size Programs
Now if one day you want to push your biostats to the limit, then I would suggest a decent programming background like has been suggested. As you will learn the term HPC (high performance computing) aka supercomputing or massively parallel processing. The use of R, Stata, SAS, SPSS can all be done using supercomputing. Plus make sure you learn some fundamental unix/linux because there are ZERO windows HPC systems in the top 500 systems.
Here an idea on the topic

GTech Rolls Out Supercomputer for Biological Research | Informatics Iron | GenomeWeb
just google biostatistics hpc for more
cheers!
