Credit by Examination vs Competency Based Learning
#1
What do you think is better for completing degree fast possibly in one year?

I am currently enrolled at TESC (doing my bachelors in CIS) with total of 36 credits, so if i transfer my credits to Hodges University they will allow only one class to transfer that means I'm more or less going to start my degree at Hodges from scratch.

TESC offers immense amount credit transfers and Hodges on the other hand offers competency based learning, I like the simple approach of competency based learning but don't really how long it will take for me complete assuming I study full time with no other distractions.

Has anyone tried doing CBE first then moved on to Competency Based learning (or vice versa) how was your experience?

My ultimate concern is to wrap up degree journey in 1 year.

I think you could probably test out faster. With testing out, you set your schedule, you drive the car. With CB learning, you are dependent on how quickly your stuff gets turned around, etc.

Assuming you can study and test fulltime, you'd be able to do it quickly. Then you'd just have the capstone or whatever is required for the program.

Just my two cents.

Also, someday maybe a MS in Forensic Psychology, just for fun.   Oh, and a BS in Animal Behavior.  And, maybe when I'm 85 a PhD in something fun.

Some people are just really bad at testing, but this could also be a problem in competency-based programs. I noticed that WGU's undergraduate programs mostly have competencies that are exam-based. A lot of other competency-based programs require a test and project/paper for each competency.

I completely agree with Goodyellowdog - testing out can be done very quickly. I was averaging 1 CLEP test every 2 weeks for my BSBA business core classes. I was also able to complete most of my Straighterline classes in less than 15 days. I think this is potentially much faster than a competency based program. Competency based programs like WGU, according to forum members like Rebel100 seem to have a lot of writing requirements which slows me down but others cAn complete writing assignments faster. I would suggest you look at one of Sanatone's degree plans to map out a test out option and then conservatively say you could complete 2-3 CLEPS per month and see how that compares to completing the hodges curriculum.

WGU's graduate programs are heavy on writing, but not so much the undergraduate programs.

Well looks like consensus is on doing the degree via CBE. My experience with CLEP and DSST exams has been fairly positive since I passed both of them, got 479 on World Religions and 52 on A and I Lit however I over prepared for both exams took me 45 days to prepare for them. Maybe I'm going to get better with experience since these exams were the first CBE exams I ever took.

Anyways the reason why I find competency based program attractive is that you have the chance of doing small assignments and your marks will periodically accumulate unlike the CLEP where you have one shot. I haven't tried earning credits through Straighterline but I have to give that a try looks very interesting. I guess the dilemma has come to some resolution I need to try doing more CLEPs and DSSTS until I can confidently say CBE is the way to go (or not).
