Degree Planning. Do I need 10 classes or 12
#1
I am starting Spring 2 for BAS-MIS at the recommendation of this forum from BLS and I thought I would’ve maxed out my transfers but I clearly didn’t. There are a few classes which I thought I covered with Sophia (Biology and Comms) but it looks like I’ll need English 121 and a few other GECs. Any recommendations for the easiest classes to fulfill my requirements?

Additionally, is it worth it to transfer in any additional classes vs taking them at UMPI like Spanish?

You can take Workplace Writing II on Sophia to fill in requirements 1B, 2C, 4B (or the College Composition CLEP if you prefer something quicker). Take Human Biology and Human Biology Lab on Sophia to fulfill 3C and 3E, and Environmental Science or Intro to Chemistry for 3D. You need a foreign language class for 5C, so you can take either Spanish or French on Sophia.

Thanks! CLEP is free through Modern States right? If so I’ll go with that. I’ve heard these Sophia classes are some of the easiest so I’ll take those as well but I worry that not fulfilling them through UMPI could possibly eat into the 30 residency courses. Would you say sucking it up and filling a few through the Gen Eds is better or just using the rest on UL electives works best?

From what I have read, it's best to bring in the gen-ed via transfers, as the UMPI courses can be a pain. You have to do at least 30 credits (10 classes) at UMPI, but there is no limit on how many credits you can transfer in. For example, my friend transferred in over 150 credits total from prior schooling + Sophia, but only 90 credits get applied to the degree.

CLEP is free via Modern States, but if you are doing Sophia anyway, Workplace Writing II may be simpler to get done in a month's subscription, working on the other classes while you wait for grading.

My only recommendation is to do Environmental Science instead of Intro to Chemistry at Sophia.

Basically, I would get everything done with Sophia.org as you're saving energy/time over CLEP, it's easier/faster using Sophia.org, make sure to get as many credits as possible for transfer credit, if it doesn't hit one of the requirements, it can go under the other courses field. You need 10 classes for residency purposes, you shouldn't plan for more than that unless there are classes you can't transfer in.

If I hit the max of 90 credits accepted already will they remove one of my other courses?

They don't remove courses.  It gets added to your transcript.

That's correct. Exactly what I mentioned in the quoted text: "if it doesn't hit one of the requirements, it can go under the other courses field"
For example, If you transfer in 150 credits, only 90 go towards the degree, the rest go under the other courses field, and won't be part of the degree.
