Hello- starting with UMPI 8/29, with 10 classes left to complete @ UMPI. I’m currently in the middle of Business Law @ Sophia for BUS 350. It got me thinking and curious, is a course like this on Sophia similar to UMPI format when a paper is the assignment to complete the course? Business Law on Sophia has 1 paper, “Did Jim and Laura buy a car”. Thanks!

UMPI has a Final Assessment which can be an exam, paper, or project. It's different for every class.

I should have expanded more that I am curious on the platform set up. Do the Yourpace courses structure similar to Sophia, such as you need to complete questions, milestones, etc before the final assessment whatever that may be. Or can you jump straight to the assessment ?

I have not taken UMPI courses yet but to answer your questions: Yes to the first question, no to the second. In short, all CBE programs that I've seen are assignments and assessments, you do all your work and have a final assessment at the end of the program, you can't jump to it until everything before that is completed.

I haven't taken courses at UMPI either, and I hope this doesn't sidetrack the conversation, but I wanted to point out at least one exception to the CBE rule: WGU. Performance assessments and external certifications can be attempted directly, and objective assessments can be taken immediately after passing the pre-assessment. I'm on my 17th and final course, and I haven't accessed any of the course material.

You must complete the entire course before submitting the Final Assessment. What you need for the Final Assessment is in the course content. All Milestones must be submitted and approved to complete the course. Some professors will require you to complete and have all of the Milestones approved before they will review your rough draft. In some classes the Milestones are part of the Final Assessment.

UMPI is nothing like WGU. You can't do anything at UMPI without being in the course content. You have to complete all of the course content at UMPI to submit your Final Assessment.

That sounds somewhat like Sophia to me, although there are obviously some nuances that can vary by course. I'm curious - is there some sort of progress tracking for the actual course content at UMPI? At Sophia, the challenge questions and milestones can be completed without actually viewing any course material in order to "test out" and save time. Can the same be done at UMPI, or is there some other mechanism for percent completed?

The percentage complete is noted in the course and in the analytics screen. All classes have quizzes. You have to click through the screens to complete the course. The percentage completed depends on you actually going through the course content and not the quizzes. Those aren't included in the course grade. Many courses have quizzes that control the course content and you can't scroll through the content without completing and passing the quizzes.
