Diff between COSC InfoSys vs CyberSecurity?
#1
Does anyone know the difference between the Information Systems degree and the Cyber Security Degree? I am interested in Cyber Security, but I do not have any work experience or certs for it. Maybe the Information Systems degree would be faster to get because it was simpler?

The IS seems to be just information systems but the CS includes Computer Science courses. The latter is "designed for students with some background in computers" but you can take some extra classes if you don't.

If I want to save money and time by taking CLEP, StraighterLine, ALEKS, and DSST courses, would those more easily apply to the "General Studies w/InfoSys Concentration", than to the CyberSecurity degree? I mostly just need a degree.

The way to calculate that (or any other degree) is to count the non 300 and 400 level computer classes that make up those degrees. Anything that is a general education or elective can be filled through testing and Straighterline, so that will give you a general jumping off point.

Would you be willing to study and take any cert exams along the way? This could both knock out specific courses in the majors and show future employers you have real-world knowledge.

I would be willing to study for certs. I've worked in IT for 20+ years, so real-world experience is not really an issue. There's just a bunch of jobs I can't apply for because they demand a 4 yr degree, or they pay 30% less if you don't have one.

For my situation I like to try to find certs that will align with classes I need to finish, because my employer is willing to pay for cert exams and I'm allowed to study for them in my down time at work.

A+ didn't get me anything in the cybersecurity major, but Security+ gave me CSS435: Fundamentals of Network Security, and Certified Ethical Hacker gave me CSS437: Hacker Techniques, Tools, and Incident Handling.

I'm now studying for the DSST Fundamentals of Cybersecurity exam (I take it July 9th) and it aligns with CSS346: Access Controls, Authentication and PKI and
CLEP Information Systems and Computer Applications which aligns with ITE102: Introduction to Computer Science

I haven't completed my application/evaluation/degree-plan yet, so I am not sure what classes I will need to take, or what certs can be taken. Are you saying that you can take certs instead of classes, and it counts towards the degree? That sounds a bit like how WGU worked. The certs were the classes.

Right, at WGU the certs were the classes. At COSC you can take the class or you can substitute a cert for some of the requirements. You don't have to, its just another option. This is why I originally decided to go to COSC instead of WGU. I didn't want forced into taking the CIW exams. (Wish I would have known about the per credit tuition plan at TESC before starting COSC, but that is a different story)

What is the "per credit plan"?? The COSC guys said that the cybersecurity path may not require me to take any more math, so I will probably do that if it turns out to be true in my case.
