I am currently a full-time lecturer and I need a doctoral degree to move in to an assistant professor (tenure track) role. I am looking for either a PhD in Information Systems, IT, CompSci or maybe a DBA with a focus on Information Systems. I mainly teach CompSci courses now but have taught some IT related courses in the Business school on campus. I have a BA in CompSci, MBA, and MS in IT.

I would need the program to be low residency or online. Any advice or suggestions? If I were to move from my current school I would only long at teaching positions or mainly teaching schools.

NOTE: For low residency I would need it to be in the midwest area of the US.

Great initial post to get the ball rolling and search starting, have you searched the board or the sister board for possible programs? Do you already have a short list of institutions and programs that interest you? For now, you really need to provide a bigger picture by filling in the addendum and template here: https://www.degreeforum.net/mybb/Thread-...Area-works

Since a new person wouldn't know this, the "sister board" is DegreeInfo. The majority of activity there at this point is just old-timers arguing politics, but there's a lot of knowledge about niche online graduate programs there too, so you may want to give us a try anyway. (I'm a moderator there, so if you try creating an account there and have trouble, say so here and I'll fix it.)

That said, are there any other criteria that matter to you? For example, is cost a factor, and if so how major is it? Does prestige matter at all or do you just need a serviceable legitimate doctorate to be eligible?

Trying to list anything that comes to mind that might fit. Some might exceed your budget or have incompatible residencies.

Hoosier Bracket
PhD Technology Management, Indiana State University
DBA Information Systems, Indiana Wesleyan University
DIT, Trine University
EdD Curriculum & Instruction, Science Education specialization, Indiana University
EdD Leadership and Innovation, with your electives chosen to relate to IT, Purdue University Global — a member here is doing this with their electives also relating to IT
DTech Leadership and Innovation, Purdue University West Lafayette flagship — breaks your budget, but wow
DBA, or PhD Global Leadership, Indiana Tech University — no apparent tech-specific concentration, but Tech in the university name

Other Contenders
PhD Information Systems, Dakota State University
PhD Computer Science, Mississippi State University
PhD Computer Science, University of Southern Mississippi
PhD Computer and Information Sciences, University of Arkansas at Little Rock
PhD Computing, University of South Alabama
PhD Information Technology, University of the Cumberlands
PhD Business or DBA, Business Analytics or Blockchain specialization, University of the Cumberlands
DBA Information Technology, South College
DBA Information Systems, Liberty University
PhD Curriculum & Instruction, STEM Education track, Texas Tech University
PhD Curriculum & Instruction, Science and Mathematics Education specialization, SUNY University at Albany
EdD Educational Leadership, elective strand and Certificate in Computer Science Education, College of Saint Scholastica — summer residency sessions in Duluth MN
EdD Computer Science Education, University of Florida — note the program is geared toward K-12 computer science education

Additionally, there are dozens of decently priced EdD and occasionally PhD degrees in instructional technology, or similar titles like educational technology or learning technologies. Stonybeach notes a good one in ACE!

Yes, take some time reviewing DegreeInfo and the graduate section of this board, do a search for programs that interest you and get a short list created... For example, add Emporia PhD in Library and Information Management. You can also take a look at the state threads I created about, Arkansas, Missouri, or international ones even, etc.

If the goal is a faculty position in CS or IS, I wouldn't do a doctorate in business, education, instructional technology, or library science—I would do one in CS or IS. Your job search will be a lot easier that way.

Unless you’re confident an internal promotion will be available with a related doctorate. Confident.

Hey I have a question about online doctorates, tried to sign up for DegreeInfo but my confirmation email isn't coming through.  Can you assist?  Thank you!
