I was just wondering if anyone here has earned a BS in Accounting at Excelsior, and if so, what were employer perceptions of it. I am currently debating enrolling in various MBA programs in 2012 and am also considering EC's Accounting program, as I already have a lot of LL Accounting credits earned for my AAS and have also taken EC's Info Lit and Business Capstone courses in the past. I work in IT but do general infrastructure support, and have been looking for a credential that may help me get into the support of financial systems. Thanks in advance for any responses.
I m edumakated thanx to distunce lerning.

I didn't go that route with EC, but I believe accounting has specific requirments if you want to sit for your CPA and I think I read that EC is accredited through the agency that credentials for that, but you may want to check. I know you don't want to be a CPA, but MBA programs may look at the credentialling of the accounting program to validate it as a viable degree. If you want to use any of those courses or that degree for entry into an MBA I would check to make sure they will be accepted. I know EC's MBA program isn't accredited, so make sure their accounting isn't the same. I would hate to see you get stung. Check with the credentialling programs and the schools you are considering for your MBA. Good luck.

Hi bawhitsett,
I know a few folks who work in IT and have picked up non-IT qualifications to help their careers. The de facto financial qualification they recommend is the CFA - Chartered Financial Analyst certificate. It's tough and there aren't so many exam diets but in general it's usually held in even greater esteem than an MBA, especially from a practitioner's position.

Excelsior has two different tracks for accounting: general and "New York state CPA". At the very least you can be assured that Excelsior can qualify you to be a CPA in New York. Don't know how much that helps you but there you go
