FYI Study.com - Q&A: Failing a college accelerator class

cookderosa Wrote:it's a little painful, but to each his own.

If you finish two exams, you're essentially paying $33.33 per credit. That's hard to beat.

When you add in proctor fee for CLEP/DSST, it's comparable at $100 per exam.

Basically, if that is true, someone can finish 12 credits instead of the 6 in one month time instead of 2 months.

I keep meaning to ask how doable it would be for the average person studying a subject that is fairly new to them to take more than 2 study.com courses a month? For instance if you have to watch all the videos before the quizzes and then maybe even study some more, how many hours on average?

That's a very good question and it all depends on how much time the individual has allocated to preparing/studying for the final exam.
I would probably rate it the same as a CLEP/DSST or even UEXCEL/TECEP, I recommend taking the Saylor exams over these courses.
The only reason I would choose Study.com courses is because some transfers at the Upper Level for credits that I can't find cheap...

Example 1: Someone who isn't working, has lots of free time, this would be a pretty good candidate to complete 4 courses in that month.
Example 2: Another individual who is married with kids, might have less than half the time to prepare for the final, should take 2/month.
As with any other course, it's getting "more resources" to prepare for the class, like an extra textbook from the library to take more notes.

that's why I said to each his own. For my money, I don't want it tied to a deadline (2/month is fast, 4/month is insane), I like to study and then test when I'm ready. When you're in a recurring billing cycle, you have to test or the money is lost. Not my first choice.

I earned my AA in 6 months, clearly too slow for some lol.

Mamasaphire: A typical 3 credit college course hits right under 50 contact hours. I think the study.com my son took was on par with that - but he did the complete course, all the videos, etc. I would be surprised if companies like SL, Sophia, Study, etc. can get ACE credit if they don't fill up the contact hours to at least mid-40's.

I agree, I'm not really fast when it comes to this stuff. Life gets in the way (I homeschool my 2 kids, my husband travels a lot, so a lot rests on me to get those kids all the places they need to be for sports and such, and usually both at the same darn time in different places!).

As for Sophia, I can say that it took me quite a while to get through it, as I was actually interested in the subject (Project Management) and had zero experience with it, so I watched ALL of the videos. That takes time. For anyone who feels comfortable just taking quizzes without watching the videos, obviously you can go through much faster.
