Fulfulling Charter Oak requirements
#1
I've got an email in to my academic counselor, but I thought I'd throw this out there.

For the general requirements, I need:
Literature and Fine Arts (taking a lit class this term)
Global Understanding
Math (not sure why, I have 6 math credits already)
Non-US History/Culture (satisfied by that lit class)
Oral Comm.

Then there's the core requirements, of which I need:
Human Resource Management
Strategic Management in HCA which is the capstone course
Leadership in Healthcare.

So. What the heck kind of clep would satisfy Global Understanding and be a relatively quick study?

Global Understanding
DSST Human/Cultural Geography
DSST A History of the Vietnam War
DSST Intro to the Modern Middle East
DSST Rise & Fall of the Soviet Union
DSST Western Europe since 1945
DSST Intro to World Religions

Math (not sure why, I have 6 math credits already)
DSST Statistics or Aleks Statistics
CLEP College Mathematics

Non-US History/Culture (satisfied by that lit class)
Oral Comm.
DSST Public Speaking or BYU Independent Study Speech class

I don't know which one of those exams is a quick study, it just depends on what you already know, or what you would care to study. The only one of those I listed for Global Understanding that I have taken is DSST Rise & Fall of the Soviet Union, but I definitely don't think it's the easiest one on the list, it was tough.

Do the other three courses need to be lower level or upper level?

Are your math credits Business Math or Accounting? They would be applied professional/Free elective if so, and you need liberal studies math class, which would explain why they don't count toward this.

Here's the list that details which exams will fulfill which of the general education requirements:

Hope that helps!

What about DSST Environment and Humanity and or World Religion test? I think those might fit the requirements.

Update: I just returned from taking DSST Human/Cultural Geography and DSST Intro to World Religions, either of which would fulfill the Global Understanding requirement, and I see that DSST Environment & Humanity does also fulfill it. So out of those four which I have taken and passed, including Rise & Fall of the USSR, I would recommend DSST Environment & Humanity: The Race to Save the Planet. It was the easiest one for me out of those.

Good luck!

Hi Freeda,

I fully agree with Alissa on the DSST Environment exam. That meets the Global requirement. If you don't have a copy the exam list is here List of Exams at Charter Oak State College

The * g * designates the global requirement on the master test list.

Thank you all so much for your input!!

The email came back from my advisor, saying: You can take exams to meet Financial Accounting, Human Resource Management and Statistics for the Concentration. The rest of the requirements for the concentration cannot be met through exams. You can also take exams to fulfill the general education requirements you need and the liberal arts electives. This means you would only need about 5 more courses and the rest could be exams to complete your degree.

Sweet. Smile I'm getting very close! I suck at math, so I am thinking of doing Straighterline for Financial Acct'g and Statistics?? And just doing human resources by exam along with the other general requirements. Let me know if I'm way off track. I really appreciate your help!

Straighterline is fantastic for accounting but I don't think you can do statistics (check with COSC). The COSC guidelines only list 4 of the SL courses as under review for credit (Comp, Algebra, Accounting and Macroeconomics). You can use Alek's for statistics.

Does anybody know if Straighterline is going to offer more classes sometime in the near future? or if COSC is going to accept more classes from Straighterline?

Thanks again guys, this was very helpful. I'm taking one more semester of COSC classes and the rest I will test out of (except oral comm, which I'll do in person, and that one straighterline course). I hope to be graduated by June so I can start a Master's.

THANK YOU!!

You have been more help than my academic advisor!
