Hey,
I took the DSST in question a couple of months ago. It is pretty detailed, even coming from someone with seventy-two hours of distance learning credits. It is substantially harder than a CLEP and gets down to specifics.
Typically, I just go to the site of my public library and reserve everything I can find on a given subject and see how it works.
I used Vietnam, A Television History on VHS (if you don't know what VHS is, don't hesitate to ask), which is seven hours total to get started. It's by Richard Ellison and it gives a good general overview, though a rather graphic one at times in pertaining to war violence.
The best source I could find for the staple of my Vietnam diet was on sparknotes.com in little pieces under subject headings. I just cut and pasted it, piece by piece, into an email draft and now it's mine as fifty pages worth of well-written, subtitled, easy to read or skim material. Don't worry, it's accessible for free so I'm not stealing it when I send it to you.

All I used was the specific exam feedback, the IC Flashcards and audio files. That is all you need to pass this exam. Everything is covered, don't sweat it.

The specific exam feedback section and the IC cards are invaluable for this one. At least, that's my opinion; here's the blog post I wrote after I took this test: A History of the Vietnam War DSST « Reformed TN Girl
Good luck, and don't worry too much! It's not a terrible test.

Hello, everyone~
I took the DSST on the Vietnam War with just using the IC flashcards, the book Vietnam: A History, by Stanley Karnow, which I only had time to start, and The Vietnam War: Day by Day, by Leo Daugherty. The latter is a photographic look at the war day by day. Only a few photos were more graphic. It gives good overview of the war, though I mostly just looked at the photos/read bit and pieces of it. Karnow's book is great for cultural impact and social understanding of the war and its impact (at least the part I got to read--an excellent resource.) The DSST fact sheet is important to use as well, though if you use IC you'll find they break down the flashcards into the sections shown on the fact sheet. (FYI: I found both of those books at my small, country library!)
It's helpful for this exam to talk to someone who was in the war. (Although, you may find they do not wart to talk about it. Starting by just thanking them for all their sacrifice and expressing your sorrow at their ill treatment at the time is a great way to begin!) My uncle lived through the Tet Offensive along with several others in Hue and by God's grace they were not discovered by the Viet Cong/NV army that had taken over that part of the city. His story made the part of history really come alive to me.
It's also helpful to realize, in a broad sense, in such an emotionally difficult subject as war (at least for me!), that God didn't make the world this way, things were perfect in the beginning, and it's mankind's fault (by disobeying God) that terrible things happen. Also, God hasn't left things this way. Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace, has come to this world (lived, died, rose again) and will come again to set up His kingdom of peace on this earth. To God be the glory!
(You may not agree with this set of beliefs/worldview but I'm not ashamed of it. The Bible can be trusted and I encourage each of you to read it--it can change your life--it has mine.)
I wish each of you well in your studies!

~ Score: 74 (Praise God!)
~ Length of study: 3 relaxed weeks
~ Resources used: InstantCert, SEF, especially a study guide posted there, Wikipedia's "Vietnam War" page, Official DSST fact sheet and practice Qs, Free-Clep-Prep practice test, Sparknotes & its PT, Snazzlefrag's notes
~ Tips: I only used online resources for this test, which was definitely enough Would've liked to watch the PBS documentary too, but didn't get around to it.
-IC was AWESOME! This the first test for which I've relied on it heavily and that was totally fine...it covered everything you need to know
-IC's Specific Exam Feedback--a gem, as always. There is a study guide posted there that was TREMENDOUSLY helpful in reminding you of those "little" important things!
-The FCP PT was too easy, but it's good way to get some details not covered in the other resources. My scores on that were 78% and 87%.
-The Official DSST fact sheet was very detailed and thorough
-Sparknotes was terrific as well, as was its ending quiz (I got 84% on that) Somehow, bolded terms just make the subject so easy to understand!!
-Snazzlefrag's notes were perfect to review from on the go.
-Here is a list that the awesome Snazzlefrag of DegreeForum compiled and I modified. Know everything on hereâit's all important.
