History of Degree Awarding Tomes
Can anyone recommend books on the subject of how degrees were award in the Middle Ages and before? I am especially interested in books that deal with the systems in place to award degrees as far back in time as possible before the Middle Ages. I am looking at how degree awarding came about in the distant past in the first place.

Cambridge was founded in 1209.
University of Bologna in 1088.
University of Paris between 1160 and 1250.
AFAIK, each university had its own unique policies. Reading up on the history of the individual university would probably yield the most precise results.

Hmm, there are so many universities out there that have a significant past, dating back a few hundred years and probably some almost a thousand years... Is it for research or for personal interest? I would search the oldest universities databases or websites and see how they were done for each one, if you need more details, an email to their respective offices may point you into more research options.
