How come these aren't TESU GenEd-worthy?
#11
Hi,

Thanks again for the responses.

1. I don't want a criminal justice bachelors. I don't hold a lot of weight in them. I started out asking here, and the hive suggested a BALS was the fastest route to a degree, also one of my criteria. With a LS, I can add other things I am good at, so I could expand my marketability.

2. I don't want to take any more classes. I want to portfolio the last five.

3. I just don't understand why DC Circuits appears to be a GenEd elective, but Electrical Print reading is not. (I would feel better about the process if I understood the pattern better. Maybe it will be like high school Spanish, and will 'click' in a few years... lol)

Thanks again for the input!

Well, a BALS is less marketable than a BA in CJ. DC circuits teaches science-related theory while print reading is an applied course.

You think so?

You go apply as a radio technician. You think they'll be more amenable to the CJ degree over one where you've had some electronics in college? Plus, aren't you the one that has said there are agencies in TX that won't even look at a CJ degree?

Another thought...

I need an upper level. Is there an upper level police psychology course that any of you are aware of, or can point me to in order to see if I can portfolio it?

Thanks

I said that there are hardly any police departments that require a CJ degree. There are only about a half a dozen that require a degree at all. How are you going to get an electronics job with a liberal studies degree? Electronics is not a liberal art. Try doing a search and see how many jobs in Texas ask for a liberal studies or liberal arts degree.

Seems a lot of work to complete a BALS
5 upper level courses at shmoop can be completed within 2-3 weeks easily and only costs $88
That will give you a BALS with a concentration in humanities.
TESU: Capstone completed Big Grin
Study.com: Classroom Management, Differentiated Instruction (6)
Patten: Academic Strategies, Child Growth and Development, Reading, Writing, and Research, Social Psych, Lifespan Development, American Government (18)

SL: Cultural Anthropology, English Comp I, English Comp II, Biology, Intro Comm, Environmental Science, Philosophy, C++,  Religion (27)
TEEX: Cyber Security for Business Professionals, Cyber Security for Everyone, Cyber Security for IT Professionals (6)
Sophia: Art History, Psychology, Sociology, Visual Comm, Dev Teams  (13)
ALEKS: Beginning Algebra, Intermediate Algebra, College Algebra, Statistics, Trigonometry (15)
NFA: Fire Service Supervision, Community Safety Educators (2)

You said it was less marketable.

I would get one because the ones I have been looking at simply require a four year degree from an accredited institution. My vocational training and experience would carry it; the degree gets me in the door.

Does a single job anywhere ask for a liberal studies degree? The only ones I've ever seen asking for a specific degree were for medical, engineering, and certain other technical fields.

You're basically sounding like your throwing the entire reason for this board to exist on its' head. Not once anywhere in here have I ever heard that a liberal degree was worthless. It may be less marketable than, say a Mechanical Engineering degree, but I would posit that it only would if you are applying to be an engineer. Those two applying for a store manager position would probably be equal.

On the other hand, I HAVE heard that a CJ degree isn't very marketable. THAT's why I like the liberal studies degree. I can show some diversity in skills; that's great because that's who I am. (shrugs).

Liberal Studies degrees are checkbox-marking degrees. There's certainly nothing marketable about them.

A liberal studies degree is one of the least marketable degrees because it says you have very little education in a specific area. It's actually been said many times on this forum. It's seen as the degree for those who couldn't choose a major. The only other degrees that are near its level are humanities and general studies without a concentration. In reality, there's no difference between filling up your free electives with electronics courses in a liberal studies program or a CJ program. Either way, you have an unrelated degree. If you just need to check the box, then any degree would do. If you focused on math and science in your liberal studies plan, then you could make a case for you yourself, but I haven't seen you mention a concentration in natural science and mathematics.

If you decide you don't want to work in electronics, then CJ would definitely be better than liberal studies: probation, parole, security management, social services, law enforcement, corrections, insurance fraud, substance abuse counseling, etc. CJ may not be as flexible as psychology or business administration, but it's definitely better than liberal studies. At least there are more than a handful of job ads that specifically mention CJ.
