Excelsior. Good College? Anyone Liked/Hated It?
#31
You might want to consider working on getting your AA first. Associate of Art in...whatever or Associate in Science in...whatever. You would want to focus on English although most colleges at least where I am don't have an English AA program. It's mostly "AA-T" or "Associate in Art for transfer" meaning it's meant for transfer.

I live around DC on the maryland side in montgomery county and I am so sick of having to try and take these remedial classes. I would rather spend 300-500 on scuba diving lessons.

are there schools that I could transfer too like a state college and just test out of them completely? this would be amazing if it were the case. I would much rather study my ass off every day from 9-12 and then go on with my day if I could..

ugh I am very stressed out. I am 25 and need to get the ball rolling. I only have thirty credits. Honestly I would love to go teach English in south east Asia but I need a bachelors. can anyone send me in the right direction?

sorry if I sound like I am complaining but damn. stressing on a Friday night!

Excelsior is the state motto of New York and I think it's ridiculous to suggest that Excelsior's name implies some sort of inferiority.

I never really understood the problem with the name. The only issue is that it's a little-known, private college with no brick and mortar campus, so some might mistaken it for a for-profit college. I wish TESC and COSC had shorter names, and I always joke that Charter Oak sounds like a nursing home. But, they both have "state" in their names, so they're easily identifiable as public colleges. Although, that can also be deceiving. The now defunct Mountain State University was a private university.

I agree; however, I also think that a lot mainstream publicity on a school where you are advertising it just like the for-profits schools is really what does a disservice, and what I think keeps Excelsior in large regard from that category. Excelsior has 38,000 students enrolled, and most people have never heard of it, most won't even add them to their online school rating list due to the fact that the majority of students can test out of their degrees. So I believe the fact that Excelsior is largely unknown benefits the school. I'm starting to see on Instagram and twitter a lot of Southern New Hampshire University memes, where people are putting the school in the same category as the for-profits even though it is not, and even though it has a brick and mortar campus. Over exposure can really harm a school.

It's definitely better to be unknown than known for the wrong reasons. Southern New Hampshire University used to be a for-profit college a long time ago, and they still operate like one. They've even admitted that they've modeled themselves after for-profit colleges.
