How to find classes to fulfill AS Tech degree at Excelsior
#1
I'm mapping out my plan for an AS in Computer Technology at Excelsior. A lot of the required courses are not available at Excelsior.

What would be the easiest way of finding the appropriate courses from other schools to satisfy these requirements? Is there some sort of database or has someone compiled a list somewhere? I tried searching but came up empty. What are some good places to find courses? Preferably self-paced and cheap LOL. I've seen a lot of people recommend Penn Foster. Are there any other good sources?

Also, how would I even begin searching for a matching course? Should I look for one with a similar title or description? I know I'm supposed to get approval from an advisor once I find a course but I'm not sure how to begin searching. For example, one of the required course is 'Data Structures'. Should I go on Penn Foster and type in 'Data Structures'?

Sorry I'm pretty clueless Sad I asked an Excelsior advisor but she wasn't very helpful. I would greatly appreciate any help. Thanks!

You can take classes pretty much anywhere. Obviously classes from RA schools will be the most transferable should you decide to attend a school other than EC. Look into your local community colleges as they can be a great value depending on where you live. Herkimer CC (herkimer.edu) in NY has many online classes and runs about $140 a credit for NY residents and about $240 a credit for out of state residents. Clovis CC (clovis.edu) in NM runs about $100 a credit for out of state residents and is even cheaper if you live in NM. If you are a California or Florida resident the tuition at most CC's and some of the state school is an absolute bargain.

Usually you find a matching course by first searching for a similar course title and then by comparing the course descriptions to see that they cover similar information. Generally if the course descriptions are similar it will be acceptable but always check with your advisor before you spend your $ and time.

As far as data structures they are probably talking about a class that covers "abstract data types" like stacks, queues, linked lists, trees, etc. Currently I am also looking for an inexpensive online data structures class. If I find something I will let you know.

I found a Data Structures class at Hudson Valley CC (hvcc.edu). They also have other computer classes that you might be able to use. The NY resident tuition is about $160 a credit including fees. The out of state tuition is $426 per credit however the tuition and fees page says that non-residents who are enrolled solely in distance learning classes will receive a "scholarship" from the college that will reduce the tuition to resident rates. For more info see the following:

brother,

Thanks so much for your help. I will take a look at the Hudson Valley course for Data Structure. However, I'm from California so I think it might not be a cost effective option for me. I'll continue searching as well and will keep you updated if I find anything. Thanks again.

No problem. When you check out hudson make sure to call the bursar about that "scholarship" for distance learning only students because it says in the tuition info page that it will reduce the cost to that of a NY resident. Also since you live in CA you really need to check out some of your local CC's from what I understand they are among the cheapest in the country for CA residents. Also remember what I said in my first post, before you invest your time or your money make sure your advisor approves the course.

Gotcha, will do. What degree program are you in enrolled in?

Technically I'm not enrolled in any program at present. I start at Herkimer CC in the fall as a transfer student pursing an AS in Accounting. Then off to Excelsior for Accounting CPA track. I need the data structures class to wrap up an AS in Computer Science from my local CC. I don't like the teaching style of the professor that teaches the class and I'm not a big fan of sitting in class in general so I've been avoiding that one class like the plague. I figure that I only need that ONE class to get the comp sci degree also so I may as well take it. Its always good to have some computer stuff on the resume.
