It sounds like you're trying to use the wrong signup button. The one on the left is for students who are using ALEKS as part of a school curriculum.

The one you want is on the right side of the page. From the signup page, click on the red link that says "purchase ALEKS as a personal tutor" under "USING ALEKS ON YOUR OWN".
