Choosing between credits on official transcript at Excelsior
#1
I have a question for any of you have graduated from Excelsior.

I have a bunch of credits that I earned in the Air Force. Many of these credits have nothing to do with the liberal arts degree I am pursuing, so I had planned to replace some of them with CLEPs. In the end I will have far more credits than required for my BSLS, so I assumed it would be up to me to decided which ones are used to meet my degree requirements. When I emailed my adviser about this is seemed to confuse her. She seems to believe the credits work in some kind of first in first used manner.

Have any of you experienced a similar situation when it comes to excess credits? If so, how did you address it?

I understand that all of my transcripts are going to be forwarded to grad school if I apply, but in a situation where only my Excelsior transcript is used, I would hate for many of my credits to appear as electrical apprenticeship.

(EDIT) After thinking about my question, I realized the best thing to do is petition to have all of my non-applicable credits added to the transcript rather than exclude any. I have answered my own question on this one.

For future EC students:

I believe there is a 30-day window from the time of enrollment to get transferred items of your choice removed from your EC transcript. Be sure to have this discussion with your advisor right away.

Before you graduate (to avoid a $25 fee later), you can ask your advisor how to have extra credits, which were not used for your degree, added to your transcript "below the degree line". (If you earned the credits after your degree is conferred, they can be added for the fee mentioned.)

I'm not sure how/if the 2 policies are used together.

I am beyond my 30 day window, but I may have found a way around it. My latest plan involves a bunch of history exams and classes. Because I have all of my lower level credits, they won't show up on my plan with Excelsior. When I get close to meeting the requirements of a history major, I will change my major and trigger a new evaluation. That should push my military credits off and use my liberal arts credits.
