Hi! I just found out I passed my teacher certification tests! The reason I wanted to post is that IC will help you with this as well. The categories for my elememtary education certification were math, science, health and finess, fine arts, language arts, social studies, reading, and an essay. With all my testing in these areas it was pretty easy to put it toward this test. I am going to try to get my psychology certification, and I am going to use IC to help me do this also. IC is the greatest, and so are the people on this forum. If anyone else is trying to get their certification, I would just say it is possible with IC!!

Bob, In my state, you can get an alternative teaching certificate. The way this is done, you can get a bachelor's degree in anything. Then if you can pass the tests that go along with the certification, you are a teacher. This was done, because we have such a teacher shortage. I have been a teacher's aide for 6 years, so I was able to take the Elementary teacher tests. Normally, you have to student teach for that category. I am graduating May 4, on line in Social science with a concentration in Education. You can take the tests before you graduate. Check in your state, if that is an option. A lot of states are going to this because of the teacher shortage. Good Luck!

We are located in Pennsylvania and I believe there is no shortage here. My wife has a BA in elementary Ed but she graduated in the 1980's and some of the requirements have changed. I have been trying to get her to check into what its takes to get cert.
Thanks,
Bob

I am also interested in where you did this. What state are you in? In NJ as far as I know you have to have your degree in education and take the praxis.
I have been substitute teaching and I am hoping to move out of NJ so I would love to know what states are doing this.

Teach-now.org has a full list of Alternate Teaching Routes and after extensive research I can say with 99% accuracy that all states have some kind of alternate route for BA holders. Some states will only allow for middle school and high school but some are for elem school too. Another angle is to go to ABCTE.org and they have a special set up to get you licensed in certain states. It was established by the Department of Education and is reasonable ($850) and self paced and is growing into other states. I liked what I saw there but am still checking around.
Teaching is a great field and there are many options for getting into it depending on your state. I was wondering about asking Steve to add a Teaching thread so potential teachers could share info on distance learning options ( I have a huge folder that I would love to share) and alternate teaching routes, teacher prep programs and Masters in Ed degrees.
