Information Systems and Computer Applications CLEP
#1
bmills072200 Wrote:Just got back from taking Information Systmes and Computer Applications...I got a 57, not a stelar score, but a pass is a pass. I was a little surprised by the depth of the test.

I used only IC and the CLEP study test and I only studied for about 5 total hours.

The test had several programming language questions: c++, Pascal and other stuff that I had no idea about. Additional study may be required outside of IC if you want to feel really secure. Some of the IC stuff is a bit outdated...the test may have been modififed over the last couple of years, not sure...

A side note, I also took the DSST Intro to Computing after the CLEP and I scored a 60 on that one and the pass score was a 45. The DSST one is definitely easier and you should choose the DSST over the CLEP if you only need one or the other...check with your school's requirements..

Did you take one of the Peterson's practice tests for the Information Systems and Computer Applications exam? I am curious because I am taking this exam this upcoming Saturday. I got 69% on the Peterson's test, which is usually pretty solid for a pass on the actual CLEP. However, your feedback here is a little bit concerning. How many questions do you think (estimate only) required knowledge of computer languages? By the way, I am not the least bit interested in scoring super high on this because my school does not issue grades for CLEP scores anyway; it is simply pass or fail, but I definitely want to pass. I would really appreciate any extra information you can provide for me.

Congratulations, it is awesome that you passed both of these exams. This Saturday I am taking Introductory Sociology and Information Systems & Computer Applications; I certainly hope that I will come home with two passes as well!

For me the Peterson's tests were really screwy on this test. The first test I took I got in the seventies, and the second one I made in the thirties. On the real test I made a 59. I thought this test was had a lot of depth. My test had a lot of questions about networks (LAN, WAN). I also had several questions about different technical jobs in large companies. I would make sure you know all the IC qustions, and look up any terms you don't know on Wikipedia.

I am not a Peterson's test guy, so I can not give you any feedback regarding that, however, I took the practice exam the night before from the CLEP book and got 70% correct, usually when I do that well I do better on the actual test, but this one was different.

If you know the IC stuff pretty solid, I would be really surprised if you actually failed it, but don't expect scores in the high 60's without some other help. My test probably had 8-10 questions of 99 related to computer languages or other extention type stuff that I did not know anything about. Don't stress too much though...there are also a lot of really easy questions...

Good Luck - let me know how it goes

Mine had questions about topologies, whether a program was server side or client side, etc. In the end, with the version of the test I got, I think it was my IT experience that got me through it. I didn't think IC was nearly in depth enough. I would go ahead and take Peterson's and look up terms. To me Peterson's was much closer to the actual test than IC was.
Passed: Information Systems and Computer Applications, Business Law, Principles of Management and Principles of Marketing.
