Free textbook source

I just heard about Flat World Knowledge (http://www.flatworldknowledge.com/) and thought it was worth sharing. It's an online initiative started by David Wiley, a BYU professor who believes traditional universities will be obsolete by 2020 (Deseret News | Universities will be 'irrelevant' by 2020, Y. professor says).

Flat World creates peer-reviewed textbooks that can be downloaded for free or bought as paperbacks for $30. The Web site appears to be having serious problems right now, but it still looks promising. It seems they also plan to offer audiobooks.

The subject list is a bit limited at this time, though a business major would probably find it robust. This is a promising development to watch.

That site looks promising. What a great idea.

Until they get it fully off the ground I will be sticking to my Foreign versions of the textbooks. They are usually available on half.com for around $25 used, and come with a paperback cover. I love the red banners on the cover that say "NOT FOR USA". Contraban!

Let's see, the books are authored here and sell here for $200 with a hardcover, and we are not allowed to buy the paperback for 1/4 the price. They are only sold at that price in countries that we compete with.

That I hadn't heard of! Now that I'm finally having to take real classes, I'll have to keep that in mind.

I started reading through their Principles of Macroeconomics text. So far, so good.

There are texts that cover macroeconomics, microeconomics, intro to business, intro to management, intro to marketing, personal finance, financial accounting, organizational behavior, business communication (technical writing), and MIS - that's ten CLEP/DSST test subjects! (twelve, if you count the CLEP info systems and DSST supervision)
