Need Guidance On Remaining Exams
#1
Hi All,

I started off with 20 classes that I need to take to finish my degree at SNHU. I planned on taking 10 classes through CLEP/DSST etc. So far I have completed 3 of them (marketing, info sys, and MIS), but I need some guidance on which of the remaining classes I should test out of since I have one more option than I need, or can take (I only get to transfer in 30 credits).

Are there any preferences to taking the classes below at the college, versus taking the EXAM via CLEP or SDC? Which of the courses below would you guys (& girls) Smile recommend, and which institution should I take the exam through CLEP/SDC (remember I can only take 7 of the 8 below)?

Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Remaining options include:

College Composition

I can recommend study.com for statistics.
I found it straightforward.
It focuses more on vocab and concepts rather than calculations and memorized formulas. Many people prefer it that way.

CLEP doesn't have a stats course, DSST does though.

Humanities through CLEP is 6cr, through Study.com is 3cr

CLEP College Comp w/Essay is worth 6cr, I'd do it this way instead of Study.com

As for which ones, it's totally up to you. Any of them are fine to transfer. I hated econ, so CLEPing/SDCing out would have been good for me (although I probably couldn't have passed). Whatever you like least, test out of (or SDC), whatever you don't mind sitting through a term doing, take the course.

Thanks,
How would that work if I took Humanities and College Comp through CLEP? Do those 6cr’s eliminate the need to take two of my other courses? I think a credit is a credit, but I’m not clear if I’m allowed to have more than 3 credits?’! Not sure if I’m making sense here. Just to be clear, if I were to take those two classes and end with 12crs, would all of those 12 credits count towards my degree? Or, would I still need to take the other required courses offered by the school for the program?

That depends on how SNHU accepts the tests. The credit recommendation by ACE is just that, a recommendation. A school can choose to accept or not accept the test or give fewer credits or require a higher score. All schools are different.

My knowledge of SNHU policy is from 2012, so I can’t help you there. You need to find SNHU’s policy in the catalog and see which exams they accept and how much credit they award for each.

The most important thing I forgot to add is that the school determines how an exam fits into your degree plan, so you really need to speak with them. They may all fall under Free electives or they may take care of a course, but not the one you were hoping.

Members of this board are able to answer questions like that about the big 3 because so many people have gone that route that it is easy to say what test takes care of what course. Not many on this board are as familiar with SNHU.

All,

Thanks for the feedback. Quick follow up question: Is English Comp 1& 2 easier via CLEP versus on SDC? I know essay writing is involved in both, at first glance, it appears that SDC more writing.

You're comparing apples-to-oranges.  The CLEP is a test, so you're writing with a time limit.  I would say you should only try it if you're a pretty proficient typist.  SDC is a course, and there are multiple essays to do for each course.

Got it. I recognize that there is a time crunch with the CLEP route, but I also noted that there were 3 essays required for one of the SDC courses. I guess the positive thing with SDC is that although there is more writing involved, at least they give the topics upfront for you to complete essays.

Thanks for the point of view!

With SDC you can also re-submit papers until you get the grade you want. Each time they will be marked with what is wrong (based on the rubric) so you just need to make corrections and resubmit to improve your grade (if you want or need to). That and you have pretty much as much time as you need to complete the papers, so you won't be in a time crunch like with the CLEP exam.
