Newbie Clep Test Taker
#1
Hi all!

I am new to the CLEP test taking and had a few simple questions/guidance, any help would be greatly appreciated Smile. I am going to attempt to CLEP out of 9 credits (3 classes) before the end of this summer. The classes I am thinking of clepping out of are Marketing, Sociology, and American Government (I heard it is harder, but I just took two law classes and feel I have a decent understanding on the topic). I guess my questions are:

1. Are there any easier CLEP tests besides sociology/government that would be better to take? The Marketing I need for sure for my major, the others honestly I just need those darn elective credits.

2. Do you think testing out of 9 credits is possible/reasonable this summer? How long did you usually study if you have taken one of the tests mentioned above before going into it? I only need a 50 for my university, as they give me a "Pass" credit I believe that doesn't impact my GPA as long as I score above 50. I have heard of kids studying in 3 days and being able to pull it off. Is this true?

3. Just any advice in general would help! Reading through the forums, I heard instacert is a really good site for studying. Do you agree?

Thank you all again SO much for your feedback! This will help me more than you know!

Welcome!

First off, Marketing is one of the easier CLEPs--you should have no problem passing it with some days of study. Another easy test that is worth 6 credits is "Analyzing and Interpreting Literature"--it will be much easier than taking Sociology and American Government, and it's only 1 test Wink It's basically reading passages and answering questions about them. You would have no problems passing it and Marketing this summer Cool

Great! May I ask on the literature, does it require essays or just short answers responses? How long did you study when you took it? That would be perfect! Thank you for the insight!

Great advice from Westerner. The literature exam is multiple choice--none of the CLEPs aside from English Composition require any writing. Smile I didn't study for that particular exam, but it really depends on your background and prior experience/classes. Have you checked out the specific exam feedback section if you're subscribed to Instantcert?

No I will check it out! What is in that section? Sorry for all the questions, I am literally new to all of this! You did not study for literature at all? What sort of questions did literature entail?

You need to be subscribed to Instantcert in order to access the specific exam feedback, which is where test-takers post their "reviews" of exams and the different resources they used to study for it. Well worth $15, in my opinion.

The questions were mostly choosing the right interpretation of different parts of a given passage, and a few matching authors to works. Again, the specific exam feedback would be more helpful in that aspect than my faulty memory. :p It's one of the easiest CLEPs out there.

I didn't study because I'm an avid reader, but it's definitely a good idea to take a practice test to gauge your own readiness and to take a look at the types of questions. You may want to check out REA's study guide CLEP Analyzing & Interpreting Literature (REA) - The Best Test Prep for the CLEP (Test Preps): The Staff of REA: 9780878918973: Amazon.com: Books which I did use just for the practice tests alone. Hopefully your library has it, or even better, your library's website might offer you access to Peterson's practice tests. It's usually under a "Testing & Education Reference Center" section, or something similarly titled. Not all libraries have it though. :/

For the actual CLEP, if you aren't very familiar with poetry, you should read a few poems to get yourself in the "mood." Also, you should study literary terms. There aren't a ton of questions, but there's enough that it has made the difference between a pass or fail with some.

The types of questions are mostly "advanced" reading comprehension questions. You read a passage (several paragraphs), and then answer questions like meanings of words in context, overall meaning/feelings of passages, etc.

In the private forum, you'll get more detail and exact lit terms to study.

Where are you applying these credits? It's true that none of the big3require the optional essay for A&I lit, but there is a chance thY other schools will require the essay.

I'm always happy to complete the free application waiver for those applying to WGU (I get a free gift from WGU for this).  Just PM me your first/last name and a valid email so I can complete their form.

Rebel's right. *facepalm* I didn't need the essay, so I completely forgot that it even exists. Big Grin Do check with your school.

Thank you all! Once again this has been so helpful, and I am going to register and pay for Instacert now in the morning Smile. I'm excited to get started!

I am applying these credits to Boise State University. Here is the link below to their description, they mention nothing about an essay so I'm not sure?
