Oracle Training question for all the IT Pros!
#1
Hey All,

My boss has offered to sign me up for Oracle training, for free. I understand this is part one and will last 10 weeks for the online training followed by a one week in-person training with the exam at the end. I'm not an IT pro by any stretch of the imagination, but I do want to complete a healthcare informatics grad cert. so I thought this couldn't hurt. My question is how much IT knowledge do I need to get through this course and pass the exam? Our network security gal completed this training last year and she said it wasn't bad, but she is in IT! I'm in grad school, teaching a heavy load for spring and will be doing two other teaching retreat/conferences during the time of this online course and I want to make sure I can handle the work load. I don't like to do things half-assed so I want to make sure I can do this and pass the exam. Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

You haven't provided enough information for anyone to give an appropriate answer. Oracle was founded decades ago by Larry Elison as a vendor of only relational database management systems. Later Oracle started offering software to create applications.

A few years ago, Oracle purchased PeopleSoft, a vendor of human resources software systems. PeopleSoft systems are used by many, many brick and mortar colleges and universities.

Oracle recently purchased Sun Microsystems, a hardware vendor.

What is the training for? Databases? Applications? PeopleSoft? Hardware? ERP?

The problem with IT training is that after somebody pays for you to be trained, they expect you to perform at the end of the training. This isn't always realistic because many people lack the prerequisite skills and aren't ready to benefit from the training. Sometimes people who aren't ready for training are better off without it because they won't be subjected to unrealistically high expectations.

How much will Oracle training benefit you for HIT? I could be totally wrong on this one, but in my work as an information vendor to the HIT community, I never talk to anyone who's working with Oracle, though I guess it depends on what you'll be doing.. I spend my days speaking with those creating EMR/EHR's and HIT/HIS systems but I could be missing something.

BTW I HATE PeopleSoft. Lol I know this has nothing to do with the thread but I just wanted to say that Smile

Good point! All I know is it is Oracle training and I'm assuming it is database applications as I was told it is learning and writing querries and such. I have a very limited knowledge base in IT "language" so I thought this would be beneficial to understanding how some of the EMR/EHR's are created and interfaced. If this isn't the case then I'm not sure I want to spend my time messing with it. Up to this point all the classes I have taken that have been titled "healthcare informatics" haven't talked at all about the programming nuts and bolts and that is what I want to learn so I can make informed choices about selecting, interfacing and running these types of systems if I move into the civilian world. I also want to be able to teach my students the basics so as managers they too can make informed choices. No offense, but software vendors will tell you whatever they think you want to hear to get the sale, so I have to be able to speak the language. A lot of my students are the decision makers or part of a decision team for EMR / EHR implementation, so have to give them good tools to use.

For those of you in the industry point me in the right direction. I don't want to create the programs, but I do want to understand how they operate and work especially with regards to integration and interfacing.

Thanks!

The advice given so far does sound good - experience and reason.

The course itself sounds like a sort of semi-in-house practitioner's course. It could be fairly straight-forward, could be more in depth.

What questions do you normally ask yourself before an exam - there is an exam at the end of this? Yes, you want to get a handle on using the system to be able to pass on a little experience but you also don't want to waste your boss' time, as you've said Smile

-What are the pre-requisites for the course?
If you were taking a course in 'psychology' with an exam at the end, the normal approach would be to see what you needed to know before studying for it. Is it upper/lower level sort of approach.

-What is the course syllabus?
Yup, what are you going to learn, what type of 'psychology' is it? Which leads directly on to...

-What and how is the final test assessed?
Is it a practical, simulated practical, written, multiple choice? You are much more experienced at test and course taking so you know what works for you.

Few questions around the course itself:

Is it an industry qualification, if so which? Who is providing the training - both the online coursework and the week training? Is it a third party vendor or the qualification-granting body? Is the course just something being done by your company in-house?

Hmm, more questions than answers here, sorry couldn't have been of more help.

Marianne - PM me if you want my work email address. I really don't mind getting a lot of detail about EMR/EHR/HIT/HIS integration for you if you still need it. I'm just the drug info sales person, but I work closely with an implementation manager and we could double-check the use of Oracle with the typical EMR. Usually the most important thing on their minds is meaningful use and Surescript certification... then come the technical questions.
