CLEP Sociology is actually pretty easy, if you know what to look for. Basically, it is the most common sense of all of the CLEPs, but it takes those common sense topics and gives them fancy, often tautological, jargon.
For example, the dramaturgical perspective of sociology means nothing more than the idea that people put up fronts in order to impress others. Well, uh, yeah. In fact, often the principle can easily be determined by looking at the general meaning of the terms. The conflict theory and the functional theory of sociology are, pretty much, exactly what they sound like. Conflict theory is that the operation of society is determined by constant.... well, conflict... between individuals and groups. Functional theory is that the operation of society is determined by... well... what is functional, or, what is determined by trial-and-error to work out best.
The best advice I could give you is to not let yourself worry too much about this exam, have fun studying, and then go out and try to beat my score :coolgleam:

[QUOTE=creative]I would HIGHLY recommend that you take the free Peterson practice tests!! They are a great study tool and these tests are very close to the real exam. If you do well on the Peterson's you will do well on the Clep. Go
here. Scroll down where it says free practice tests and follow the directions where to get them. This has helped me more than anything with the Clep exams. They are free so you have nothing to lose! Hope this helps![/QUOTE

I've had multiple reports over the last few weeks about the INSPIRE site not working for people. As far as I can narrow it down, it seems to be a corrupt cookie with IE.
Either - A) Completely wiping out your IE temp cache and cookies or B) Downloading Google Chrome from the page that Creationstory listed above seems to solve the problem.
Some people get by with A), but everyone who has tried B) has gotten it to work. Besides, you get to use Chrome which is sooooo much better than IE anyway.

Get an 80.

Two weeks.

Meh! I thought I had them all correct :roflol: Kidding! There were a handful of questions that were incredibly specific to certain disciplines, and frankly didn't belong in a supposedly introductory exam. Some questions asked about a specific percentage of people within a specific demographic that met some specific criterion. I doubt even a Sociology professor could have answered it without looking it up.
I guess those 4 or so questions were there just to shake things up a bit, since the rest of the questions were all pretty easy

Craniac,
I'm impressed & encouraged by your score! How long did you prepare for the test? This is my first time to try to CLEP, and I'd like to know if it's possible to CLEP Sociology, Human Growth &D and American Lit in 4 weeks, or if anyone else has worked on a time frame like that- with the caveat that I need "B-level" scores. I see you've taken two of these, what do you think?

I found both the online Cliffs Notes on Sociology &
Free Sociology Notes,Sociology Definition,Sociology Study Guide,Meaning Scope Of Sociology,Define Sociology Theory,Define Sociology,Introduction To Sociology,Sociology Study,Free Sociology Notes,Sociology Concept,Online Sociology Course helpful and easy to follow. I took it yesterday and scored a 53. I studied 2 days with the Peterson's online & , sociology guide Cliffs only. I wasn't trying for a high score - just a pass. After passing the last two practice tests I felt like I could at least pass it without stressing.
A lot of it is common sense (I've NEVER took a social science class before). If you study an overview of the basic theories & the key beliefs of the major people you should be able to pass it. My test had several questions that looked QUITE similar to questions I answered on Peterson's. Just read the questions and all the answers. Don't be overwhelmed by the fact that it is 100 questions. I finished in under an hour.
I don't advocate the cram method I used, but I hope this gives you another perspective of whats possible in a short time frame.
