Question regarding Oral Communication req/ Study.com

After 10+ years, I am returning to school to finally finish my degree. I went to one of them IT technical career institutes, PC AGE. One of the selling points of the institute for me back then was I would have 38 credits to use towards to a AAS at TESU. 


Since I had credits from CC as well, I only need three classes to complete an AAS in computer studies, SOS-110, APS-295, and COM209 or English202.  I have registered for these courses for the June term, however,  I have discovered Study.com (from this forum), I think I can take a course there for the Oral communication requirement? Being that his will save me a great deal of money, I am considering dropping the COM209 course I signed up for Communications 101 at Study.com. Is this something I can do? 


I have also learned of the residency fee. My question for that is, although my near term goal is to finish my Associates and apply for graduation possibly in December. Will I need to pay the residency fee then? Since I would have less than 16 credits from TESU. I am considering taking classes towards a BA in IT. Unfortunately the classes I had in mind are not offered in June term.

Regarding the English 202, you could take CLEP for free.  You sign up using Modernstates.org.  If you are already good in English then just watch the videos to be able to get the voucher for the exam.  Sign up to take the exam on clep.collegeboard.org, and use the free voucher for the correct English CLEP.  I forget right now which is which, but one is only 3 credits, and one is 6 credits.  Make sure you sign up for the one with writing.  (Which happens to be extremely easy writing.)  Lastly, I received an email today stating that starting soon you can take CLEP exams from your home!!  I haven't read all the info yet, but I am done with CLEP after tons of tests.  Hope that helps.

There is no CLEP that replaces ENG202 (Technical Writing). There is a TECEP for $150, though: http://www2.tesu.edu/tecep.php?CourseCode=ENG-201 mashr, are you sure that it's Technical Writing OR Public Speaking? Could you share a screenshot of your degree evaluation?

This requires English Composition I ENC-101 OR English Composition II ENC-102.  There is no ENG202 requirement.

I think some degree plans (used to) allow you to take either Public Speaking or Technical Writing for the Oral Communication requirement. But I'm not sure that's still the case.

Also, OP, if you are talking about the AAS in Computer Studies, check out your "what if" for an ASNSM in Computer Science and see how close you are. The ASNSM has no associate capstone, so you'd only need to take SOS-110 and you could fill in any remaining credits cheaply and easily from Study.com or elsewhere.

If you want to save the most money, most people here would tell you to drop all the courses except for SOS-110.
Use my guide on how to get through the SOS-110 without any stress.  That course you will get an A or B guaranteed, no worries.

Instead of Applied computer studies, you can do Computer Science which then eliminates the need to take APS-295 capstone from TESU.  However, you would need a math requirement higher than college algebra which the easiest would be statistics from Sophia.org.  (if you didn't already have a stats math course)

The Oral Communication requirement, the easiest course is study.com Communications 120: Presentation Skills in the Workplace which satisfies the Oral Communication requirement for TESU.  You can complete this course in 1-3 days.

For English Composition I ENC-101 & English Composition II the CLEP exam would be the fastest.  You could take Modern States to earn free voucher or just pay the CLEP fee and take the test at home via an online proctor. Other options are Study.com or Sophia.org.

Actually, I think CSM Learn would work for one math requirement. That would arguably be both faster and cheaper than Sophia.

To answer your residency waiver question, yes, you would need to pay the waiver when you apply for graduation. It's very expensive for an associates degree, and if you don't plan to continue beyond the associates you might want to consider alternatives even if your PC AGE courses won't transfer (BOG AAS possibly, since you have some CC credits). The only good thing about the TESU waiver fee is that if you continue onto a bachelor's at TESU, you don't need to pay the residency waiver fee again (https://www.tesu.edu/tuition/fees).

I second the suggestion to look at your ASNSM Computer Science "what if..." so you can possibly avoid the associate's capstone, and only need to take SOS-110 and the waiver fee if you want to continue with TESU.

Unfortunately, I have too many math credits to be able to tell 100% for sure. My CSM Learn moved up into part D (understanding the physical & natural world) and the math class I took at Strayer moved into section E (math). But CSM does work as a 2nd math class for business degrees so it should work fine.
