Questions about Intro to Psychology
#1
Hi everyone!

I'm new to the boards, and am very exited "meet" so many fellow CLEP testers! I have a quick question to ask about the Introduction to Psychology CLEP test. I've taken several CLEP tests already (due to take my fifth one on September 1), so I'm very comfortable with the CLEP process. I'd really like to CLEP psychology, however I've heard that this is a rather difficult test, so I would like a little imput. For those of you who have taken this test, how hard was it in your opinion, and how did you study for it? I have the REA psychology book, and was thinking that I'd intensly study it and the sparksnotes website for about two or three weeks. (If anyone else knows of any other websites that would be helpful, please let me know!) Does this sound like a good study plan? Is there anything special that I need to focus on?

Thanks in advance!

Oh, by the way, I forgot to add that I have and am still using the search feature to research this topic, and have found it to be very helpful. Still, I would like a little personal direction and affermation, so I hope nobody minds my asking this question!:o

Making 60% or higher on the REA should guarantee a comfortable amount of studying and enable you to pass this test. If you haven't studied Psychology before, the most important things to know probably are the vocabulary and different types of psychology (behaviorism, psycho-analysis...). I took this test 10 months ago, so my memory is limited, but I remember questions where they would give a situation and ask what type of psychologist would do such-and-such. It's really not a very hard test, in my opinion. It was my first test, and I believe I studied for 6 weeks or so. I passed with a 62.

I didn't use the Peterson's tests for Psychology, but if you would like to take some extra practice tests, they're probably good. I enjoyed the Standard Deviants Psychology video because it explains things really well and really simply. Smile

One of the things my mom really emphasizes when my brother and I study for CLEPs is to memorize the answers (and why they're right) to the practice test questions. That helps us a lot!

Intro. to Psych. was my fourth and latest CLEP test. I always mean to study for at least three to four weeks with each test but I always end up putting it off and cramming a few days before.

I studied for three or four days. I studied REA's Super Review Psych. I & Psych. II. I just went through and highlighted which sections College Board said woud be on the test and read through them. I also had Barron's Psychology (College Review Series). I didn't get a chance to read it thoroughly, but just from skimming it, it seemed like it was a bit more in depth and may have been a better study guide than both of those REA's.

Just from reading the Super Reviews I made a 66 on the CLEP. If I had taken more time to study I could have done even better, so you should do fine if you actually study for three weeks.

As the above poster noted, a lot of the test is situational. You are given a situation or set of symptoms and have to name the disorder or field of psychology used to deal with it. I also seem to remember there being more Freud on the test than I expected(I didn't study anything on Freud).

I'm sure it's fine. You can supplement it with web resources if you are really paranoid about it.
