Sailor Math for English BA at TESC?
#1
Hi there,
My daughter (senior in high school) would like to take an online math class instead of studying alone for the College Math CLEP. We're looking into Saylor's College Algebra class. 2 questions:

1. Will it fulfill the math requirement for an English major at TESC?
2. After she's done with the course, where does she take the test (the $25 one)? Is it at a testing center like the CLEP?

So sorry, she's only taken 2 CLEPs and we're just barely venturing out into other ways to earn her degree.

Thank you so, so much!

I believe Saylor Beginning Algebra transfers as College Algebra, so yes it fulfills the College-Level Math Course requirement at TESC.
The exam can be taken online through ProctorU and Saylor. Info here: National College Credit Recommendation Service (NCCRS) | Saylor Academy

There is also the option of using ALEKS. There are a few courses available for credit:
Intermediate Algebra 3 credits.
College Algebra 3 credits.
Trigonometry or Precalc 3 credits. (choose one only)
Intro to Statistics or Bus Stats or Stats Behavioral Science 3 credits. (choose one only)

You can sign up as a parent for a free trial to try it out. ALEKS for Independent Use
It is normally $20 per month.

After the trial, I studied all the subjects up to Stats level for free (using books and free websites) and then signed up properly. I completed all the courses within a month giving me 12 credits for $20.

The extra credits can fill out - Electives in Intellectual and Practical Skills, Natural Sciences, and General Education Electives. Stats is also a requirement on other degrees.

You will need an account at ACE to bank the credits.

My son is in high school as well and we are just venturing into earning college credit. We chose ALEKS for Math. He has taken Beginning and Intermediate Algebra and is now working on College Algebra. I like ALEKS, but we have noticed that there are times that he needs more instruction and we have found Kahn Academy is very helpful. I have not looked closely at Saylor Beginning Algebra, but if you like it and it suits your needs, go with it. It is a very affordable option. Good Luck!

Just for a heads-up, through College Algebra the ALEKS methodology is quite adequate with just a little additional outside help. However, when you get to more concept than calculation driven subjects like trigonometry and statistics, ALEKS seems to fall down on the job. If your son has done well in both high school geometry and trig. then this might not be apparent until stats. My suggestion would be for anyone struggling with ALEKS trig and/or stats would be to take a MOOC from EdEx or Coursera and then do ALEKS for practice and credit.

I find this guy's videos better than Khan's

Saylor is probably a really good choice if your daughter is new to self-driven independent study and wants something that feels more like a traditional class. It's also a good option if you need something that is an 'all in one product' kind of thing where you probably won't have to look up additional resources for her (Saylor stuff is filled with resources already).

If she's more self-driven, I would also chime in supporting Aleks as a great option. Next to the videos by Herb Gross ( Arithmetic Videos ), Aleks has been the only math program my daughter has liked, and the fact that she knows there is no high pressure proctored exam down the road in it makes it more comfortable for her (math stresses her out enough as it is). We tried tons of different ones over the years, and she's decided she's going to use Aleks for all her high school / college stuff now (credit courses: Independent Use (Homeschoolers) - ACE Credit Courses ). But it's self-driven entirely - there are no lectures of even readings, its all just solving problems and if you get them wrong, viewing the right answer solved in steps on how to do it to learn from. Any of those things you want to incorporate beyond that.. you have to add in yourself.
