Uexcel and TECEP tests seem to be closely aligned with the specific suggested texts. But it seems that CLEPs and DSSTs cover the subjects in a more general way, and therefore any text or study source on the subject can be used (IC, FCP, Ed. Portal, Cliffsnotes, etc.) as long as the subject matter has been mastered. So do you think that it is essential to use the study material provided by Saylor, or could other sources be used instead?
I'd probably have to say that the final exam is pretty close to the material. For the 2 courses I took, Saylor adapted the textbook for their course so it went along with all the quizzes and exams pretty well. I'd say if you wanted to supplement it wouldn't hurt, but they tend to include links to different materials. For example, the Prin. of Finance course had a textbook, but then they also had you watch some Khan Academy videos.
I don't know if that was really helpful or not! :o I'd definitely try the unproctored final exam before attempting the proctored one to get a feel for what the exam is like.

Due to time constraints, I'm just going to be studying all the questions in the Business Law and Ethics "Final Exam" rather than reading through all the material in Saylor. Would you say it's possible to pass the unproctored final exam by doing this?

I don't think that just studying the final exam questions will be enough. If you don't have time to do everything, I would at least take a look at the videos that are included in the course. I always found those very helpful. Even then, I don't know if that would be enough. I did everything in the course and probably put in about 5 hours a day/5 days a week for about 4 weeks and I only got barely passing scores. You should probably use more than one study resource.
I might be confused though....are you studying to take the Business Law CLEP or are you going to attempt getting credit through Saylor? If you're getting the credit through Saylor, then you will have to take the proctored final exam in order to receive credit. You probably already know that, but I wanted to make sure.

I'm doing Saylor's Principles of Marketing and I found the final exam to be very different from the quizzes. I haven't taken the proctored final yet so I can't speak to how similar the two final exams are, but I can say that the quizzes which I typically passed with 80% or higher first try did NOT prepare me for the test sample exam which I only got 66% first try.
On a different tangent, I had commented on how wordy I found Saylor's courses. Just the marketing pdf (without the quizzes, external web page reading and audio/video files), is 554 pages long and around 155 thousand words. Someone turned me on to the FREE Education-portal.com principles marketing class and by comparison, I find it the material very clear and relevant, available both in video and text format, and is an average of 82 thousand words for the entire course. I would have been better off to go through the materials at Education-portal.com and then take the Saylor quizzes for my prep.
Perhaps, there is an alternative good resource for the business law & ethics that you could use in addition to or in place of saylors materials? education-portal.com does offer an introductory business law course, but you would have to see if the content was a good match. I wish I could help you more. I am interested in what you find for study materials as I will also have to take that course through Saylor.

Took my proctored principles of marketing test today and passed with 80%. About 20% of the questions seemed to be from the saylor practice quizzes. Some terminology differed from the education-portal.com classes. Some questions related to very specific information like the 1996 European Union commission regarding comparative advertising.
Now I just have to figure out how to get my college credit through tesc.

Great job!! Nice review as well!
If that is the only class you are taking from Saylor, then just submit the transcript request form and they'll send your score to TESC. If you are taking other courses, then wait till you are all finished with all the courses and then submit the transcript request!

Why wait? Does it cost for subsequent transcripts.? If not get it on your TESC transcript right away! No need to find out that they changed their mind, like FEMA,s in you leave it a month or two
Don't forget that gaining college credit by taking exams is one of the reason's we're here. That's mainly possible through the flashcards made available by the owner of this forum : InstantCert Plus of course your hard work in learning and reviewing

I do plan to take potentially 4 more courses from Saylor.org. However, I was so excited that I did request a copy of my transcript today. And true, regarding TESC changing their mind.
I don't really like the learning materials provided by Saylor, but you can't beat the price. Fortunately, there are a lot of alternative learning materials out there.
