Shmoop

So our son wants to take History of Technology and Ecommerce at Shmoop. I tried to register him, but since he is under 13, the website made me create a parent account using my real name. Then, I had to create a student account from there. I had to choose usernames for myself and my son, and it stated specifically to not use the student's real name as a username. So I picked something along the lines of Pokémon345 for him. I have not subscribed for a plan yet.

My question is: Since I did not provide my son's name, email address or birthday anywhere, how will I be able to add courses to his ACE account upon completion? Will that be entered when I subscribe?

You should check with Shmoop on that. They're the ones who do the validation with ACE.

There are probably not many kids that age trying to take college-level courses, so I worry that they might not have a process for it. COPPA rules restrict the information that sites can collect/store about kids under 13, which may conflict with what they need to provide to ACE. Hopefully, they can work it out.

Yes, I was aware of COPPA. Study.com and SL have a way for parents to approve a student account, so that has been seemless. Sophia, Saylor and most others do not allow students under 13 to sign up with them. I sent an email to shmoop and will report back what they say. Thanks.
