I am looking at taking the CLEP test for Spanish. My main question was whether I will be tested over the "vosotros" (you, plural, informal) form of verbs?
Thanks a lot.

It's been about a year since I took my Spanish CLEP and I don't entirely remember whether vosotros shows up. If it does, it couldn't be on there too much otherwise I would have never gotten such a good score. I would make sure that you know what the vosotros conjugations look like, and understand what it means, but I don't think you would need to know more than that. I speak fluent Spanish and couldn't speak in vosotros if you paid me.
HTH!

It's not difficult to understand, but I would have a hard time actually speaking it. I am currently doing some work with Spain in my job, and understanding vosotros is not nearly as difficult as understanding their accent. Now to complicate things even more, in some Central and South American countries, they won't use tu, they will use vos (not vosotros) instead. You can read a good explanation of it here: Use of Pronoun 'Vos' in Argentina and Guatemala - Learn Spanish Language You won't need vos on the Spanish language exam... I'm just telling you because I have come across it and the first time I heard vos I was totally confused! I met a girl from Honduras who started speaking to me in the form of Ud. I said "háblame de tú " She replied that she didn't know how to speak in the tú form and could only speak in Ud. or Vos! Well, since I couldn't understand vos very well, I asked her to speak to me in Ud after all, even though it felt a little too formal for me!

Here's why: The 6 credit part of the CLEP shows that you have the knowledge from the first two semesters of College level Spanish. If you managed to get all 12 credits, it shows knowledge of four semesters of Spanish. I doubt that any school would give you double credit for a Spanish 101 equivalent. Sorry.. I know this isn't what you want to hear, but I want to be realistic. I would still recommend studying up as much as you can for the test and taking it regardless. If you pass, you'll still end up ahead and maybe there's a chance you could score enough to get the 12 credits. You might not, but why not spend the next couple of weeks studying as hard as you can and try anyway?

I took the Spanish CLEP and got a 65 on it, which was enough for 12 credits at my school...
I don't remember there being vosotros on it though.

In my instance there was not a Vosotros usage. The most tricky aspect of the test was in a few occurrences of Spanish language specific idioms, but even those were quite rare. For the most part, if you have a good command of general conversational Spanish, passing will not be difficult.
I walked in a little nervous because I have not been in consistent conversational practice for a few months, and I have never taken a formal baseline Spanish class. I succeeded at earning a 74 on the test. The test administrator was amazed that a jovial Scottish looking gentlemen such as myself could walk in and grab such a score. Little did she know that I have lived a considerable amount of time in Argentina, and have made a living working in the Puerto Rican security field for several years. Jeje. |
