Just wanted to double check if this is true, or if COSC gives grades for these courses.

I'm always happy to complete the free application waiver for those applying to WGU (I get a free gift from WGU for this). Just PM me your first/last name and a valid email so I can complete their form.

I was told by someone on the forum that if sent through ACE then to COSC it would come up as pass/fail, is that true? Can SL courses even be sent to ACE & then to COSC?

I concur with rebel100, I was told that COSC gives grades for Straighterline. The ACE thing is probably accurate, but SL will send them directly to COSC, so there's no need for 3rd party.

Do you have to specify what college you're taking SL credits for? Let's say you didn't put down COSC, and just took the SL course, and sent it to ACE, then you could avoid getting a letter grade i.e. a C on it.
Reason why I'm thinking of doing this is because an MPA program I'm looking into (Arkansas State's MPA online program) has a US government course requirement.

You don't have to specify a college to take SL, and they will send to ACE. I don't know if doing so will circumvent the grade. Most schools want your credits from the original source, I found this particularly true for graduate school application. Has Arkansas told you they will even take ACE for proof of the pre-req? I can imagine them allowing it, but I can also imagine them insisting on an actual course from a RA school.
I fear that without express permission to use the SL->ACE or SL on its own you may be spinning your wheels. Most schools that accept ACE think of it in terms of providing elective credit for military service, not for the alternative education so popular among us on this forum. See the info on ACE at the bottom of this page Transfer of Credit < University of Arkansas

That's a valid point, and something I had thought about. I think a lot of it comes down to the grad. program hopefully informally scanning the transcripts from undergrad and not caring too much. That's why I want to get the coursework on my COSC transcript before everything is said and done.
Fortunately, with Arkansas they just have two pre/co-reqs and they are some course in economics (I think it's microeconomics but I'm not sure), and US government. Well, I called the program and I mentioned if they would care if the US government course was a pass rather than a minimum of C, and the lady seemed to think it wouldn't be a big deal.
I guess what I am going to do is try to get a B or A in the SL course (I think a B shouldn't be too hard to get with minimal prep and will not impact my overall GPA too much), and hopefully when that happens just send it to COSC directly thereby avoiding the issue in the first place.

I think you will find SL to be not as tedious as you had previously assumed. I would, however, suggest an electronic version of the book. You can buy a used copy of the physical book and cut/scan it pretty cheap (kinkos will unbind it for maybe $10 and any modern office copier can scan). Pull into Adobe and OCR, and should be good to go.
Currently studying for: Still deciding.
Done!

Yeah, I was fortunately able to find the ebook version thanks to the help and advice of some forum members.

So I found this: http://www.astate.edu/a/hlc/resources/_f...n-2013.pdf
This is from the undergraduate bulletin, but I assume that the graduate program won't care as long as it's ACE certified.
"TRANSFER CREDIT POLICY
Transfer work will be entered on the studentâs permanent academic record when an official
transcript is presented to the University from a regionally accredited institution. All other transfer work
received is evaluated and considered on a case by case basis in the Office of Admissions, Records
and Registration in conjunction with Academic Affairs and Office of International Programs (as applicable).
ASU will consider awarding credit toward an Associate or a Baccalaureate degree for Advanced
Placement (AP), College Level Examination program (CLEP), Military service education and experi- ence, DANTES, formal non collegiate courses for which credit has been recommended as listed in
the Directory of National Program on Non Collegiate Sponsored Instruction and in the National Guide to Educational Credit for Training Programs published by ACE, International Baccalaureate,
and Excelsior College Exams.
NOTE: Transfer credit may not satisfy specific General Requirements For All Baccalaureate Degrees.
Transfer credit may not satisfy specific degree requirements. Students must review the
university requirements and specific major requirements required for their degree.
The Academic Load Policy will govern the number of hours a student may apply toward the
aca- demic record when concurrently enrolled at ASU-Jonesboro and other institutions of higher education. ASU-Jonesboro hours will be applied first if more than the maximum number of hours are
submitted for approval. Currently enrolled students should not take courses at other institutions
without first checking with the advisors regarding the applicability of the courses for ASU credit and to
ensure that they are not taking inappropriate courses, non-equivalent courses, out-of-sequence
courses, courses on the wrong level or an overload for the semester.
Transfer of English Composition courses will not be accepted from international institutions. This
policy is normally waived for citizens of the British Isles, Australia, the English speaking portions of
Canada and New Zealand."
