Study.com New CS Courses
Which of these is most time consuming and which is least time consuming, for someone without prior knowledge in these topics but general knowledge / has done a little programming?

Discrete Math from Study.com
Computer Architecture from Study.com
Operating Systems from Study.com

Intro to Operating Systems, I did that in 1 day including the final. I had a 92 after all was said and done. It should come in as COS-240. You should then work on Discrete Math and Computer Architecture as this requires an assignment. What other courses are you missing for the BA Comp Sci? Have you decided on your electives? You should do the MIS course if you haven't done it already.

Well I have completed all 3 and I can say the Operating Systems course currently cannot be completed for me, the final assignment is too vague and the course does not prepare you for it, and up to when I took it the sample code provided in C does not compile, even after fixing it, I still dont understand what the assginment is asking to do.

The intro to operating systems however course can be compeled and is very very easy.

If you dont know programming well the discrete math will be challenging, its not a hard course but having programming experience really helps, and not basic programming like professional experience. Even if you are math savvy but not too good with CS it will be challenging since the course took a CS perspective.

The computer architecture course for me was good, but I have experience with electronics and logic design with FPGAs. YMMV though. The final assignment especially will be challenging for someone without prior knowledge and I did a clever 'hack' for the control unit to pass lol. It also relies on what you learned in discrete math.

So if you want my advice do the intro to operating systems, discrete math then comp architecture.

Non CS aptitute people are lucky they have SDC. In a traditional college settings these courses along with data structures are known as weed out courses, and people who are into doing a CS degree because it seems nice or has pay will not make it pass these courses. However with alternative credit its doable.

You can pass just work hard and these are courses you cant half-ass you gotta give 110% and put in the work, understand what is being taught and have a genunine interest else that discrete math expecially half way you may want to give up as it gets complex. You can do it!

And btw this is my opinion having taken all 3 and passed all 3.

@bjcheng77 what did you think of these courses?

Did you finish the final assignment for Operating Systems? (The non intro version)

If anyone can tell, does the Data Structures course presume Java or C++ knowledge? I'm aware the course isn't done and doesn't give credit yet, but trying to work on my prerequisite and overall knowledge.
Could I manage Data Structures with only PHP knowledge? Because I am more interested in learning Python than Java/C++.

Ok great. I guess I will also need to take one more Study.com.

I updated my BA-CS thread Smile

@ideas data structures is more about principles than language. PHP wont prepare you for that course. It seem like SDC will use Java, however with data structures and algorithms language dosent matter, though with the C based languages like C++ and Java a lot of info exists, so I would focus on those.

I'm just waiting for the Study.com Operating Systems to be updated to UL on ACE, then I'll submit my assignments.
I am hoping it would transfer to TESU as COS-352 Operating Systems Simulation.

It seems they may have had this course offering before but discontinued it as I can't see it in the list of course offerings.
But you can still see reference to the course itself with the syllabus and comp sci certificate

Link: https://www2.tesu.edu/syllabus/current/C...S-352.html
Link: https://www.tesu.edu/heavin/ba/computer-science1

Just for learning purposes and for review, I'm taking pretty much every Comp Sci related course at SL/Study.com even if it's LL.
It would save me so much more money than taking those programming courses, for example, at TESU or another provider.

@bjcheung hmmm...well I guess I'll wait to do those assignments as well.

I am also taking everything! Except the network security and the C++ course.

I'd like to do that too.

I just finished the quizzes for discrete math (studying for the exam 1 or 2 days), this course really felt all over the place, there are sections that could be part of a high school math class, the matrices section is so basic it's not even funny.

It's start kind of hard, then it becomes easy, then you have a small section at the end that takes you back a notch in complexity. The matrices section has videos, but some of the complex stuff does not. I would venture to guess some sections are coming from other math courses.

I would be curious to know how someone that did a full Discrete Math course feels about this one. With the other CS courses Study.com added before (system analysis and database), I found system analysis quite good, but having done a database course before, study.com assignments felt not nearly enough.

By the end of my database course, we were designing an entire database, this really felt too easy for a UL course.

Someone at TESU told me that Intro to Operating Systems, Discrete Math, and Computer Architecture won't work in my BA-CS, but that Database Management can be an elective. I guess I will have to take them and transfer them.
