There wasn't when I was doing it. With fill-in-the-blank, it's asking me for something I don't know, so I can't fill it in. It's frustrating for me. Again, my brain doesn't work like that.

Yes, I realize that it will give you the answer if you don't know, but that's not the context I'm looking for. I mean that I need to learn the subject in a more straightforward manner, walking through it all. THEN I can use flashcards. But they just don't work for me to learn new material. I find that if I don't know the answer, and I get it to show me, the next time I go through the cards, I get the SAME questions wrong. Over and over again. But if I know the material well, and I use the flashcards, then I can think a little and get the answers right most of the time. It actually helps then.

I was talking about the explanations that come with the flashcards and how they are organized, but I understand. However, I felt this way with the Sophia videos. They're disjointed and not very detailed. For a subject like microeconomics, I felt a strong urge to find a textbook. Plus, it was hard for me to pay attention to the videos because they were so boring and tedious. I'm faster at scanning textbooks and finding the parts I need to thoroughly read. The flashcards also work for me because I prefer reading text over auditory and visual explanations. I miss bits and pieces because I zone out.

With microecon, I'm struggling with the graphs, and how they change. That is just hard to see in a textbook.

I did fine in AP economics with a textbook and a teacher using a chalkboard. Drawing differrent graphs on a chalkboard is the same as seeing multiple graphs in a textbook.

dfrecore Wrote:I do happen to know!! I signed up for SpeedyPrep a couple of months back, to study for Microeconomics. I hate the flashcard system (I know many of you love it and that's great). But my brain just doesn't work that way - I have to actually go through and learn the material - for the life of me cannot memorize the info on a flashcard with no context. For me flashcards only work as a study tool AFTER I learn, but before I test.

Anyway, they have videos in addition to flashcards (the intro screen says "Learning Network" powered by CollegePlus"). When you open the list of courses, you can choose either the course which takes you to the flashcards, or "videos." I haven't watched much yet, so can't give info on it.

I'm the same. I like using the diagrams within chapters, throwing them in paint or Photoshop, and squeezing in the information within the diagram using lots of colors. Flashcards are horrible for me because I'm a very visual learner and am not a memorizer by any means. My method of studying is kind of time consuming but the time I spend doing what I do with the diagrams I learn the material pretty well, not to mention is amazing for quick review. I passed my anatomy class at my CC with a 96 this way and chemistry with 87 :-)

I'm also curious as to how study.com classes are in comparison to straighterline courses besides price point.

Great info on how to get the most out of SpeedyPrep if you are a "visual learner". How did you come to know that you were a visual learner? My daughter-in-law (DIL) is taking A & P at her CC this term, seems to be doing alright (B+ so far)using the Pearson materials (lots of visuals in here) included online in the course. But I am trying to figure out how she should approach CLEPs. In my day - 45 years ago - I do not recall learning style as identifiable. Knowing that my "haptic" son did not lead me to any insight on how to provide TLC support during his unsatisfying, although ultimately successful (TESC BA Music 2013), academic career. My DIL is just starting out and needs course delivery structure. She did not finish an EdEx English Comp MOOC as a prep for English credit. She is math-phobic and is not responding well to the AKEKS approach for her needed remedial skills. Last semester she completed Bio I w/lab with a disappointing C+ in spite of great effort. And her Medical Terminology grade was an ok B. Any clues or suggestions you might have would be gratefully appreciated.

[COLOR="#4B0082"]I know there are a lot of assessments to determine how one learns best, their intelligence type in Garner's terms, etc. This might help you figure out what your DIL's learning style and intelligence "type" is (really meaning what kind of general areas and would do best in and such).

Thanks a heap.
I tried the 20 questions on myself. Auditory and Visual split about evenly with Tactile only half as much. I'll now try this questionnaire on my other 3 learners to see if I can figure out from significant differences among them what approach may actually make a difference if their styles turn out very dissimilar from my own.
