TESC 2nd degree
#1
For those of you who earned a B.A. at TESC and graduated--did you have to pay the enrollment fee, again, when you went back for a 2nd B.A.?

Also curious to know which B.A. you went for 1st and which you went for 2nd and why you decided to do so. Have any of you gone for Social Sciences, Liberal Studies or Humanities the first time around and pursued something like Economics, Math, Biology, etc. for the 2nd time around? I see a lot of Psychology and History majors out there. Just curious!

I have had others give me feedback that this is an expensive route and too time consuming, as you will see in other threads.

PS. I'm asking to help my friend. After I showed her how I am completing my degree she took interest in going this route as well. She didn't ask, herself, because she currently has internet access via the school library and isn't always near a school PC.Felt the need to explain that because I often wonder why others ask questions for friends, etc. but she's kind of broke and down in the dumps, so I figured I could kickstart things for her.

You have to make a decision on what you want to do with it Cherry.

I'm asking others. My friend is interested in completing her degree and just needs any degree as she wants to enter as an officer in the Navy, but also wants to go on to get a 2nd degree. This thread isn't about anyone making a decision for me. I just want feedback on the experience others have had. My friend loves Sociology but told me she wants to finish something fast so she can join the military as an officer, so she's even open to Liberal Studies. I'm emailing her the link to this thread so she can read it once she's near a school library PC.

How does she plan to earn a commission? That should be the first thing on her mind, not a second degree.

Truthfully don't even know how that works, but it was my understanding that one needs to complete a concentration within the Liberal Arts to go on for a 2nd degree in a different concentration. From what I told her, Liberal Studies, Humanities and Social Sciences are more of a collection of "concentrations", if you will. She's still undecided on which branch of the military she wants to join, although she stated a preference for Navy.

I'm still somewhat new here and dealing with my own process, so I don't really know what advice to give her. She was initially going for a Sociology degree and has 91 credits to transfer over.

Here's a starting point on the Navy: How to Become a Commissioned Officer in the Navy | eHow.com

Whichever service she attempts to join as an officer, she really needs to be very physically fit- it's not possible to lead from the rear and OCS is partly about weeding out people who don't have the physical endurance.

I'm assuming she has that covered. My post is about her 2nd degree. I'm encouraging her to complete her degree in Sociology since she has a lot of credits, but she told me she wants something more substantial as well. She was like me..wants to just finish a degree..but also wants to know if she can go for a 2nd. She's interested in a 2nd B.A. and has expressed Economics or Math as an interest. I don't know much, but told her to go for Sociology, then her 2nd degree. I have a bad feeling that if she goes for S.S. or HUmanities she would somehow run into a roadblock when trying to go for her 2nd degree.

Frankly, she isn't going to have time to pursue a second bachelor's degree in math or economics while on active duty, plus to support her career an advanced degree may be required, not some extraneous bachelor's degree. She needs to focus on what is important.

Y, I get what you're saying, but that wasn't my question and honestly, that's for her to worry about.

I totally appreciate what you're saying and I DO agree, but that's more up to her and being that I never want to join the military, I wouldn't really know about all of that. If she's in the military her 2nd degree can be paid for, so I figured that's going to be a non issue for her.

She got really excited when I explained to her how the big 3 work and she's leaning toward TESC right now.

I shot a message to my advisor, but just curious for others feedback.

She shouldn't assume that an officer will get a 2nd bachelor's degree paid for by the military while on active duty. In her case, she should assume that she will be paying another TESC enrollment fee out of her pocket should she try to obtain a second bachelor's degree while on active duty as an officer. Officers don't usually have a lot of free time, BTW, i.e., they typically work long hours, so the thought that she will be able to complete 24 hours of math courses in a year while doing OCS and getting commissioned is a pipe dream.
