My EC Capstone Disaster/Advice Appreciated

davewill Wrote:On the ethics front, there's the whole question of the ethics of exploiting animals for human purposes. It's not enough just to say, "I don't think we should." Especially when trying to convince multiple cultures to change their laws and practices. There are several ethical theories when it comes to the animal rights and the environment. Some people believe that animals should accorded rights on the same level as we do people. The Gaia hypothesis views the entire planet as a single organism, so that harm we do to other animals ultimately harms the planet and works to our own disadvantage. Look through the Saylor Environmental Ethics course, section 2 for info on environmental ethics theories.

As far as diversity goes, it is pretty much hand-in-hand with the ethical issue. It's easy for rich nations to tell poor nations that they shouldn't exploit their own natural resources, when the rich nations freely did so in the past to get where they are. Somehow the interests of all the cultures involved have to be taken into account.

Hi...and thanks so much for your input.

We're very much on the same page...I used Animal Testing for my Ethics Essay...I'm still trying to either narrow down the Animal Trafficking topic to find a subject for the PowerPoint (my theme was basically, the negative aspects of animal trafficking: funds crime, transmits disease and threatens endangered species) or alternatively, write another essay using an expanded topic, then use Animal Trafficking for the PowerPoint - but what large topic incorporates Animal Trafficking, ethics and diversity? ( after weeks of going back and forth with this, this is where I hit the banghead).

I will check out the Saylor sites...Again, many thanks!

For your powerpoint you could add in snip-its from a commercial or speeches, as well as add in your own voice to punctuate points.

Two easy tutorials -
PowerPoint 2007 - Adding Sounds, Narration, and Music

Youtube is a gold mine and there is a free program, Any Video Converter, that you can use to download videos then use the cut feature to snip specific sections of a video to add to your presentation. You can even use the convert feature to convert the video to an mp3 then snip the section for audio tracks to add to the presentation.

Thanks so much...I'll check out the tutorials you've listed...I'm still at the beginner/learning stage with regards to PowerPoint:willynilly:, so including video may be beyond me:o...

My plan was to find a narrowed topic (haven't figured this out yet), then try to complete the required outline plan of the presentation, then figure out how to create "slides", then figure out what on earth you're supposed to "say" and how to say it...I'm so intimidated by all this "figuring out" I've panicked...I think if I can come up with the narrow topic I'll calm down, slightly...very...very...slightly.

I had an idea for a diversity issue. Around why is it OK for the West to lecture other countries about the treatment of animals when
1/ they exploit animals venerated in other countries (I'm thinking specifically cows and the Hindu religion here) in a mechanised farming environment. Who says which animals can be exploited and which can't? It's all based on culture rather than on facts.
2/ in Western Europe the inhabitants long ago (thousands of years) killed all or most of the dangerous animals (eg wolves, bears) but they lecture the developing world that they should allow themselves and their families to be at risk from dangerous animals like tigers, in order to save the species.

Anyway, not sure if that was any help at all, but just something that came to mind.
