TESU - did I mess up by applying to late?
#1
Hey guys, hoping to hear your thoughts on this...

I applied to both COSC and TESU back in 2017 and have slowly been chipping away at completing courses through SL and Davar. Despite the higher costs, I finally decided I wanted to complete my BSBA Finance degree through TESU and re-applied last week. This morning I checked out my academic evaluation which had all my credits from the transcripts sent back in 2017 and noticed that SOS-110 Living in the Information Age (Information Literacy) was listed as a requirement instead of the 1 credit cornerstone. So I e-mailed academic advising and asked them why SOS-110 was listed instead of TES-100. I was planning on starting the capstone in the March 2019 term. I even sent them screenshots of the BSBA in Finance Credit Distribution list on their website which still specified TES-100 as a requirement with no mention of SOS-110 .

This is what it says on the  cornerstone webpage:
Beginning July 1, 2019 all students who have not completed TES-100 by June 30, 2019 will be required to take SOS-110 (3 credits), in lieu of TES-100. SOS-110 may be used to fulfill the required Information Literacy requirement or as an elective in all undergraduate degree programs.

I explained all this my e-mail to the advisor and this was her reply:

TES-100 is being retired and will not be available past the June 2019 term. When you access your evaluation, you'll notice that TES-100 is not listed on the document anywhere as a requirement, but SOS-110 is. Your catalog year is determined based upon your application date.

You'll also notice you have 1 credit pending in the general education elective area. If you want to take TES-100 in the next few months (before it's retired), you can still attempt it for that 1 credit.

Huh

So... I have to take SOS-110 because my catalog year is 2019? And pay $1098 instead of $300? Why isn't this info available on the website? At the end of the day, I'll do what I have to do but this really got me down. One of the reasons I switched from COSC to TESU was because the cornerstone/capstone component was more flexible. Sad

What it sounds like they are telling you if you can still take the TES-100 (instead of the SOS-110) but you need to do it prior to June.  If you complete the TES-100 in time, then the SOS-110 will be waived.

You said you applied to TESU  in 2017 have you remained active during this time? Are you actually an active student now - it seems advising sometimes gives different responses to active students and those just making inquiries (ie. if you applied in 2017 and let you active status expire).

I think they are telling you that you can still take TES-100 instead of SOS-110, but I agree that their answers and your eval are confusing. The simplest way to go may be to try and register for TES-100. If it allows you to without registering for SOS-110, that may be your answer. If it won't, then contact advising and ask them to do it for you. You may also want to push advising a little harder for a less ambiguous answer.

Wow. I'm slow today. I think you guys are right...thanks allvia/davewill!

When I first emailed her about SOS-110 being a requirement on my evaluation, (I emailed her about courses as well) this was her initial reply:

TES-100 is no longer required. For your degree program/catalog year, you must take SOS-110, Living in the Information Age.

Then when I replied back with screenshots of the BSBA in Finance Credit Distribution list, she sent me the reply in my previous post. I just assumed she shot me down with an ambiguous "no". I'm just going to register for TES-100 and see what happens.

Yeah, that's a funky answer (not unusual with TESU). Also, their catalog year starts on July 1, so you're still on the 2018/2019 catalog.

I applied earlier this month and I also have that same question. They told me since my catalog year is 2019, I have to take SOS-100 to get a degree. She also said that requirement went into effect on January 1. I think she got it mixed up with the Cornerstone, so I'm waiting on a reply to confirm.

She just replied and said anyone who applied on January 1 and after must take SOS-110. ☹

Well, that sucks. They couldn't just wait for the new catalog year to start in July? It's like they're going out of their way to make people angry.

I guess I'll just take the ACE classes first and then take SOS-110 and the capstone.

There is definitely no reason to take both. Even if you can't get SOS-110 waived, that means you take it instead of the cornerstone

I meant to say capstone, I always get the names mixed up. I fixed the error.
