TESC BA Mathematics Degree Plan, hopefully my last
#1
Hey,

I've been a bit of a ghost the last little while, I was on here a lot about 6 or so months ago but then life happened, I got married and got sidetracked by all that. So, hopefully as a married man I can finally get my degree.

I submitted it in PDF format, since it comes out looking quite nice. I've transcribed the course codes from TESC. These aren't guesses, they are from one of several sources:

a) Officially transcribed from my previous credit evaluation
b) CLEP - College-Level Exam Program
c) DANTES
d) Actual TESC courses/exams that already have a course code

A couple courses I hadn't submitted before and didn't know how they would transfer (Athabasca ones). I also added a column for GPA, just to remind myself which courses would contribute to my GPA (painfully obvious).

Just wanted to know if you think it's all kosher, and you think it makes sense. I have quite a road ahead of me with all those advanced math courses, but I guess it's worth the sacrifice.

I'm also still looking for one more advanced math course (I suppose it can't be 100-level, but I'm not sure on that).

So, experts, is it all looking good?

***edit: just to be clear, red courses have not yet been completed

Are you sure the Statistics DSST will be accepted in the Area of Study? If so, there is a calculus-based 300 level Probability and Statistics course from LSU you might want to see about getting approved for the remaining three credits. Alternatively, you could take 3 UL math courses from Empire State College rather than four of them from TESC (unless you are on an enrollment plan with TESC).

I'm not 100%, I actually have the ALEKS Stats in there, and they haven't evaluated those credits into my program yet. I assume it'll be OK, since the area of study already has two 200-level courses already (Calc I and II). Stats should translate to STA-201, hopefully it'll be alright.

Is there a huge difference in the cost of tuition at Empire State? I would consider it, but I've grown to like TESC's online system, since I'm in China I'd like things to be almost completely online. As well, I want to have several courses count towards my GPA, since a lot of teacher's colleges require a certain GPA, and seem to frown upon a degree with few courses contributing to GPA. I was actually considering the enrollment plan with TESC, and if I do, perhaps choose some extra courses to go with that.

Thanks for looking over my degree plan, Yenisei!

The fact that it's a Probability & Statistics requirement in the Area of Study suggests that they want a calculus-based course, and the ALEKS and DSST options are algebra-based. Just verify.

Every course I have had with ESC has been proctor-free and pretty challenging. I last took a course with them in 2011, when tuition was $211 per credit hour, so it may be higher now. They have a pretty good selection of UL applied math courses such as Mathematical Modeling.

I spent some time looking over their offerings (ESC). As a degree, it's not really for me, given the residency requirement (32) and 128 credit system, and the cost ($325/credit for non-ny residents vs $221/credit at TESC, and they'll grant me letter grades). Ohio U has been great too, really responsive and gave me a good impression with their service, I wish I was taking more exams through them. They're switching to semester system next fall, so their exams will become all the more appealing in the future.

I haven't gotten a reply yet on this issue, perhaps I won't until I'm actually enrolled, but if you notice, they're very clear on the page about Linear algebra being calculus based, but nothing is mentioned of statistics/probability. TESC also offers STA-201 as a course, in fact it's their only statistics course. As well, they list non-parametric statistics as a potential "in-major" course. Here's hoping it'll work out. If not I guess I'll go with another school for that course, thanks for the info.

I wasn't suggesting that you get your degree from ESC, just taking some UL math courses from them. Additionally, I think you may have found their on-site tuition rates rather than their online course rates.

STA-201 is a course for business and economics majors, not math majors (note that it meets a BSBA core requirement). Take a look at LSU's UL Probability & Statistics and you'll see the difference. Because it's in the Area of Study for the Mathematics major, I strongly doubt that STA-201 is what TESC has in mind, but the usual caveat applies- confirm that in writing with an advisor.

If anyone's curious, I just spoke with my advisor, and they've added STA-201 as my statistics requirement for my Math Major. When you think about it, most math degrees don't require statistics at all, they often consider it a specialty field within math. Anyways, they just want the intro to statistics, and ALEKS/DSST both fulfill that requirement.
