Transferring ACE to a CC
#1
Hey, my local community college is a Sophia partner; Does anyone know if its possible to transfer in Sophia courses, earn my associates at the CC, and then transfer to a state school that wouldn't usually accept ACE credits?

Thanks!

Possible -  yes, but it really depends on the school.  Each school has their own rules on what it allows in. Only the school you're planning to transfer to can answer that for your specific situation. If the CC and the State school you're referring to are within the same state, the CC itself may have some information on that - but again, it is the State school that you want to transfer to that ultimately decides what they'll take in transfer.

You have to check with the state school if they accept ACE credits. Just because your community college accepts them does not mean that they will transfer elsewhere. There are state schools such as TESU and UMPI which accept a great deal of ACE credit, but most do not outside of CLEP and AP. Even with CLEP and AP they are selective.

If a state college doesn't accept ACE, then you can't transfer them in. Maybe they waive the G.E. if you already have a bachelor's degree that includes lots of ACE credits.

You are better off earning RA credit via UMPI.  And also doing CLEPS/DSST's if they allow.

If your state has a 4yr school that has a block transfer agreement with your CC, then yes, it's possible. So you'd have to check.

CA, as an example, has a block transfer agreement between all of their CSU- and UC-system schools and all 113 cc's - but they specifically list which credits will work. Many/most of the CC's allow you to take CLEP and DSST exams for their degrees - but if you want to transfer to a CSU-system school, then you have to look at what that particular school will accept from CLEP, and they take zero DSST exams. If you want to transfer to a UC-system school, then you can't use CLEP or DSST at all. The transfer agreements specifically list what will work for the block transfer program.

So, find out if your CC has an articulation or transfer agreement with any of the 4yr schools you want to go to, and see if there's a backdoor there that you can exploit. It's a rare unicorn if you find it, but there are a few out there.

There are a handful of schools that won't accept ACE credits directly, but will accept them if they have been transcripted by another school. It's very much a YMMV situation.

In general, it's a "no, you can't, but..." type situation.
