I have run into the requirement of having a .edu email address, but I get around it by using my email address at the local community college. The local cc issues an email address once you apply, even if you don't follow through on taking courses.

I had an issue last year when i was trying to buy something from MS with a edu discount the same week when my school email server went down, so i could not get the confirmation code. I called them and they had me take a screen shot while logged into the school website showing i was currently enrolled. I think they had me send a pic of some sort of identification too, i cant remember if i sent my DL or school ID. then they took my order over the phone and applied the discount.
