University of Colorado Masters in Electrical Engineering
#1
University of Colorado, Boulder is offering an online masters degree in electrical engineering through Coursera. Admissions is performance-based meaning that you will be admitted as long as you earn a B average in one of the specializations. The program is entirely elective, which means that there are no required courses. It's a stackable degree, so you complete the specializations you want until you have 30 credits.

The program is going to be launched over the next 1-2 years. You can complete the non-credit certificates now and convert them to credit later by paying tuition ($667 per credit hour) and completing additional hands-on coursework.

Ha. Looks like I'll be waiting even longer for it to launch for credit.

I assumed this would launch on the edx platform since they have an upcoming MS in EE. I guess we can look forward to seeing what they have to offer as well.

I knew it would be performance based admissions but I don't know how I feel about taking non credit courses and then maybe later they open up the option for paying extra and doing extra work to be for credit. Especially since the initial information they had for this program was that it would start last semester with the rest becoming available this year. Not something I have to worry about yet since I still have about 6 months left in my current undergrad degree.

I do like the idea of the flexible 1 credit 3-6 week courses that can build into grad certificates Giving intermediate credentials along the way in case I can't finish a full master's. It will be interesting to see how this program plays out.

The program is performance based admissions (if you pass your initial courses with a B average you can continue) but it also assumes the student has a bachelor's in EE or similar. I won't quite be there, but we will see if I can bridge the knowledge gap somewhat with independent studying and hands on work experience.

At the very least it offers a low risk way to try the program before committing hundreds or thousands of dollars.

I can't quite figure out how much you would pay now, and then how much you'd pay to convert them to credit.  Here's what it says on the website:

Enroll in Specializations Now, Earn Credit Later
The full Master of Science in Electrical Engineering curriculum will launch over the next 1-2 years. You can start working to complete courses within non-credit Specializations now, and convert them to credit later as the degree comes fully online. (To convert a Specialization for credit, you will need to complete additional hands-on coursework and pay tuition.)

Anyone have any idea on how that would work?  Because if it's free now, and you only have to pay at the end, basically when you're completely done and know that you're going to get a degree, that's kind of awesome.  If you have to pay some portion now, and then pay additional amounts ($20k), then not as good.

I'm wondering how financial aid would work if students are completing most of the coursework now in non-credit certificate programs. I would assume there wouldn't be much more to do to earn credit, so I don't know how the program would qualify for Title IV funding.
