Non-IT certification for credit?
#1
Heyo!
So I have always worked in recreation and I am eligible to test out for the National Parks & Recreation Association Certified Parks & Recreation Professional certification. This is something that quite a few schools have their graduates from a Recreation management program take in their senior year and it is the most respected cert in this field.
I've never taken the test for it but now that I'm working on the degree I'm wondering if it's worth it for potential credit transfer. It isn't ace approved but I know a lot of IT certs are given credit so how does that work? How could I find out if/what it will transfer as before I spend the cash? I tried Google to no avail.

Thanks!

Primarily it will depend on the school you are going through and the specific degree path you are enrolled in as far as if they will accept it. At first glance, if you are getting a degree in a parks/recreation field, then they are more likely to give you credit for it (likely under an 'applied professional' heading, but this could vary).

I recommend calling/emailing your advisor to find out who specifically you need to contact regarding credit for the certification.

How many credits does it get at other schools? If it's 3 credits or 6 or something like that, then it's probably not worth going through the TESC PLA course to get credit for it that way. But if it's a lot of credit, then you might want to think about that.

I'm not sure, I don't think it's credit rewarding, just something they have to take as a graduation requirement.

In that case, TESC has not evaluated it for credit, and it wouldn't really apply to a BSBA outside of the Free Electives or MAYBE the Business Electives section, so it's probably not worth it. You can use a number of other sources for the free electives (TEEX, FA, Kaplan, Saylor) that are free or only $25.

You can pay $300 for COSC to evaluate a credential. I did this with the Certified Ethical Hacker credential...but I was basing it off of a hacking class they already offered and thought it would align.

You can look through the Previous Evaluated Credentials to get an idea of the obscure things they have evaluated in the past and what kind of course work was awarded for it...I know there is one for being a beer brewmaster.
